Hi All,

I have a feeling the fuel pickup inside the fuel tank of my FJ40 is nearly blocked (after having blamed my dizzy ). It is the later model that sits under the body and will be taking it out soon to inspect.

I would be keen to replace it with an aftermarket tank to sit on top of the rear tub, between the wheel arch's.

Does anyone have, or know of a second hand one for sale? Or maybe a cheap place to get one made up?

Alternatively, if that proves too expensive I may be in the market for a good condition second hand factory one if anyone has one of those?

Why not buy a plastic fuel cell? there not too badly priced and easy to fit!!
So does this mean the dizzys all sweet?

Yeah, this is probably my first option - cheap and fast. Although I'm expecting that its probably blocked by rust?? So would need to replace tank anyway.

If its just dirt then I'll run with what I've got but future mod is in mind... Rear mounted winch - and the underfloor tank sits right in the way!!! Could kill two birds with one stone by replacing it now.

There was one on trademe not so long ago that I'm now kicking myself that I didn't buy.

Plastic is not a bad idea. Who sells them?

I'm hoping its not the dizzy. Tested the power feed - At dizzy - 12v with key on, 14.7v at idle, and 14.8v on rev. I'm assuming that sounds sweet so not a power feed issue?

While plugging the multimeter in we noticed the fuel filter wasn't full of gas. So disconnected line at the carb and pressured the fuel tank and no fuel came through, same again in front of the filter and no fuel came through so seams like it might have been getting enough to idle but couldn't suck enough fuel on rev...

Connected a funnel up to filter and filled it with gas. It seamed to rev better but was pinning pretty bad which I'm now hoping is just timing.

Next plan is to clean out the tank, and redo timing and keep fingers crossed that is what the issue is

PS. Two pumps of the accelerator completed drained the fuel filter of gas Thirsty beasty

Good to hear your making progress, the power supply sounds good could be a tooth out still and cap on wrong way but you wont know till the fuel issues are sorted but your heading in the rite direction. Good work.
V8 shops have the plastic tanks or performance car places have them.

Yeah, that is sexy but wont fit my newer model tub. Bit out of my price range anyway...

Thanks Muddy. I'll try an drop the tank out of mine tomorrow and if its full of rust I'll take you up on that offer.

What fuel pump are you using? Stardard or an electric one? you may need to look at that too if you tank was rusty then no doubt the pump could be getting blocked or buggered too.

Just the standard mechanical one.

It seamed to suck the gas through really well when we rigged up the funnel of gas on the in-feed of the fuel filter so I'm guessing the pump is working ok?

$70 of trademe and local pick up so pretty happy with that.

Dimensions are pretty good for the rear tray (which I might modify a little to take this). 80ltrs so should keep the thirsty truck running all day

Yeah, hopefully.

I'm going to cut a hole in the rear tub to recess this tank a little. Plumb it in, do the timing again and hopefully that's it (fingers crossed),

Got some other cosmetic stuff that I want to do as well while its all clean, but the truck should be driveable soon,

Got the tank out tonight. snapped three bolts in the process And damn there was alot of mud on it

Tank internals were clean as a whistle, no rust or dirt at all, and the intake was completely fine

Blew through the fuel line and no blockages

Fuel pump to come off next...
