I've swapped my rear Lsd to the front and didn't, it still seems to be going alright. Done quite a few hard arse trips on it so I'm unsure of the reason for shortening axles ?

Fitted long shaft last night and it seamed very hard to turn axle and even harder to turn when on full lock , I had a look in the LSD head and could see a shoulder at the end of the spline , checked std open diff and the shoulder was in 5 mm more , Im thinking that if it bottoms out it will push the centre out of under the king pins and put more strain on CV

What is the turning like with the lsd in the front , i put my locker in front and it got a lot heaver and i smashed Cvs and turning was a bit different ,

Turning is good, not a problem. Thats with a welded rear also :!:
LSDs dont inhibit turning as much as a locker (from what I've observed), but then again a LSD doesn't actucually lock up both wheels as good as a locker.

I looked at a spare LSD diff head on my bench this morning and cant see the step you are talking about, all it has is the block that the cross pins go thru With a wear mark on it from the axle end anyway.
So I reacon if it was me putting mine together again I would leave the spring clips off the axle ends (the ones on the inside that hold the CV on) especially if your running more Hp and like to break CVs  - that way a CV would be easier to change (much like the way some put a spot of weld on ?)

From memory it is 5mm off each axle, I had to do it to mine in a few years.
There was a thread on here years ago about it, Think it was a Supralux thread?

yes, stock it looks like there's only a 25mm gap which is fine as open diffs you can see right through but the lsd's have the clutch packs so that's why you can see them and ive measured them up as being 35mm thick so yeah,5mm off each side is the look of it

This is interesting, never knew.
does anyone know how the setup works with the E locker put in the front? I never looked at that aspect when I fitted it. It seems happy enough but would be good to know there is clearance in there. bit hard to check now

I've had an open diff then a LSD now an E-locker in the front of my hilux, Never had to mod axles for any of the different diffs.

The only time i can remember shortening axles was my neighbours hiace, going from open 4.88 to open 4.1 we had to take 5mm off to make it fit :?

mhm, yeah it all seems a bit here and there ae.were planning to fit axles and knuckles in the morning all dry and then measure gap between axles while diff head is out the compare to lsd pack thickness.lsd pack ive measured at 35mm and a rough measurement of axles says 25 and when i was in the first time everything was really tight to turn over and even steering leading me to believe that it was all tight and binding up.will get pics and measurements as we do it all tomorrow for future reference for everyone

ok no pics sorry guys but its pretty self explanatory.lsd that we had had a centre clutch pack width of 33mm but the distance between axles in the housing was only 30mm so we have have trimmed 2.5mm of each side giving 1mm clearance so there will be no binding
