Hey folks, new to the forum thing so hopefully I get this in the right place etc.
I'm trying to identify the gearbox in my Hilux. Not a straight forward as checking the chassis tag i'm afraid.
The truck has been re-bodied and re-powered, with a 350 chev. I was told the box was from a Dyna, with the hilux transfer case adapted on, (possibly using a Dellow adaptor kit). HOWEVER: The Dyna box is meant to have the same front bolt pattern as the R series Hilux box. Mine has anything but!
The box has 4 bolts holding it to the bellhousing. The bolts go through externally cast lugs on the box, so you can see them clearly with the gearbox still in the truck.
A couple of clues for those who might be in the know. The box is 5 speed, conventional shift pattern. It has right side shift mechanisms (mod-ed for the Hilux) and two switches on the selector shafts - it seems to me one is for exhaust brakes, the other reversing lights. It has a VERY low first gear. All of this points to Dyna I know, but the external mounting has got me confused. Oh - it has a mechanical speedo drive on the drivers side, and a large flat bolt on inspection/access cover on the left (passengers) side.
I can try and post pics, but the techo side of it might be a challenge for me, and the box is still in the truck. If anyone has any pearls of wisdom, I'd be glad for the advice.
Cheers
Can anyone ID this gearbox?

Re: Can anyone ID this gearbox?
The dyna gearbox was always linkage driven because there a truck so no gear lever but they can be converted to stick shift but the gear pattern moves from right to left instead of left to right.
Sound like a cruiser box they have the 4 external lugs and are a common gearbox to bolt to chevs.

Thanks for that - I'll see what I can dredge up on the net. I may not have been clear in the post, the box is a linkage shift type. It has two levers exiting the box on the right side and then going into a homade shifter contraption to convert to floor shift. Does that still sound like a cruiser? I had an FJ45 - I didn't think it had linkages, but that was a few beers ago......

Argh ok, yea not cruiser then if it has linkages for the shifter, then it does sound like dyna gearbox they did have the external mounting lugs.

Re: Can anyone ID this gearbox?
Thanks again. Marks Adaptors and other places on the net reckon the Dyna box has the same mounting bolt pattern as the R series Hilux, rather than the 4 external bolts. Blessed if i know!
I want to ditch the 'dyna' box and install a Hilux box for better on road driveability. If the bolt pattern I have is not R series hilux, (I'm sure it's not) I'll also need a bellhousing to mate the 350 to the Hilux box. The idea is if i can ID what box is in there now, I may be able to source a better on-road box that will fit my existing bellhousing.
Unless anyone out there has got a 350 to Hilux bellhousing they want to part with cheap???

This is early dyna box

But the later ones are similar to hilux the way the mount to the bellhousing.
