Toyota 5L valve adjustment

Post by Petemcc »

Hi guys,

I am wanting to adjust the valves in my hilux. Its a ln106 but it has a 5l out of a hiace in it.

After some research I have determined i will need a tool for removing the valve shims (to push the lifter down while you pull the shim out) I understand that some people make do with screwdrivers etc but I would rather use the correct tool so that I don't risk damaging anything.

So my question is does anyone know where I could get one of these tools from? I am down in Qtwn but have a mate coming down from chch in the next few days and could get him to pick one up for me.

Also where do you get new shims from? Just toyota or are they a common thing?. And do you just buy the ones you need or can I buy a mix of different sizes so I can do the job all in one go?

My other option is to just send it to someone to get it done which I assume would cost about the same as buying the tool and a micrometer... however if I got all the bits now it would be free next time!

Cheers,
Pete

Before purchasing tools, have you checked them?
They may already be ok.....
The shims are expensive and I would only change what you need to....
And from memory its only one shim......They have different thicknesses....
You might be able to mix and match what you already have until you end up with just a few to replace....

Also they are done when engine is Cold.....
My 1KZTE and 2LT and 3L manuals all have a chart which tells you what shim to use depending on what gap you have....

Yea I have checked them following the manual and all exhaust valves a well below the specified clearance.

The tool I am after is like the one in this video... This guy has a box of shims, that's what I want haha. It would be interesting to know how many engines have the same size shims.

How expensive are you talking for shims? Have you bought some before?

Looking at the video the tool doesn't look like it would be too expensive
