id start by just double checking there's the correct amount of oil in the gearbox and that it looks to be of good condition, but if all that's ok it sounds like the gears syncos are going.if they have syncros that is. I'm not sure if they do

its a 26 year old truck with half a million click's on the clock the syncros will be a bit worn, you'll get used to the gear changes

so long as the bearings arent noisey and its not jumping out of gear it'll go for ever, you'll soon get used to changing gear at the right speed and revs so it dosent grunch as much between gear changes, did you test drive the truck before you brought it

Good point.
Mine is only 7 years younger with 212,000k's on the clock, but the syncro from 2nd to 3rd is a little dodgy so I just move it slower.

Gearboxes do that when they are full of Banana skins too

Give it an all over birthday with a full service. I always do that with new vehicles, otherwise you have no idea what nick the oil/filters/ coolant yada yada is in. Can also bring your attention to problems ie bearings going.

I always changed oil and threw some Moreys oil stabilizer stuff in with it. Seemed to help the navara G/boxs last longer and change nicer.

If they have the nylon grommet on the gear lever these can cause problems when worn and are an easy fix.Makes gears hard to change and sometimes simply wont go in.Remove your gearstick from the top of the box and have a look. If the grommet is worn fit a new one they are cheap. flag.

Also just got an 88 BJ70 with the same problem. Only 140k's on mine. Test drove fine, but started grinding a bit into 2nd. Did an oil change, only to find the gearbox oil was low. It had all gone into the transfer case! Common problem from what I've read online? Anyway.... In getting the gearbox to transfer case seal replaced at the moment.
Might be worth looking at?
Oh and Hi! Great forum!

An old but still relevant trick from the 80's in Toyo's (and loads of others) is to buy some Slick 50
http://www.finda.co.nz/business/listing ... 50-nz-ltd/I dont condone many additives as a rule - but this thing is wonderful in manual tran's that are a little lazy in syncro's & you dont wanna fix it yet.......
