Swivel/Hub rebuild

Post by Flannel »

So the 80 I bought is long overdue for some maintenance. Front Right CV clicks a bunch now & Swivel seals gone too.

I bought a Full Swivel Kit, 4 rotors, new pads, handbrake shoes.
4 wheel bearing kits also on the way soon and rear axle seals. Then new CV's (probably from 4wdbits unless anyone has another recommendation)

Anything else worth doing at the same time?

Check the large brass bush in the spindle.... They tend to wear in the full time 4wd's there is a Toyota upgrade where they use a needle roller bearing so I am told.....

I am sure other 80 series owners will chip in....

Also check the splines on the axles for wear, plus check the spline in the flange that bolts onto the hub taht the outer end of the CV goes into, these wear due to full time 4WD.

Cheers guys, the brass bush comes as part of the kit. So will be replaced.

Not a job I will tackle though, so il get my mechanic to check the flange/axle splines and i can get them if needed.

Starting at the bottom and working my way up. It can be her 20th bday present.

Just in the process at present check my posts and will find my thread which I shall go back and update soon but can tell you a couple of things, what every one said correct.
not sure what kit you have but hilux brass bush is narrow'er in an effort to make last longer with constant 4wd. bigger outer diameter too. your kit propably right. spoke to toyota about the needle roller thing. got a blank look. muppets. probably a later model development.brass bush $220 from toyota couldnt find aftermarket.measured everything and decided brass bush wasnt worn enough to be causing seals to die. Oil leaking out swivel housing is inner axle seal not the ones on ball. as I couldnt find a reason for a new seal to be leaking I decided to get the genuine seals for a looksee. $47 the revelation was the toyota seal has an extra fold in rubber allowing the lip to move 5ml or more in any direction so it stays in contact and stays intact. generic seals dont allow that much movement. SACEO bearings had never seen a seal like it. proplem solved

So perhaps toyota seals would be worth investigating then. Cheers!
