High mounted Stop Lights

Post by Moriarty »

Took the Siwsan's Rav for a WOF last week.

Asked the guys about regulations re: Hi-stop lights.

What are the regulations etc etc.

ANSWER:

:arrow: "Dont know, lets read the WOF Bible.

:arrow: Wof bible MA class vehicles must have HS lights fitted and working. MA class vehicles are Passenger cars!!

My Twuck is NOT a MA vehicle and by that comment, confirmed by WOF people in WGI, neither is ANY OTHER truck like mine or yours.
Would pay to ask you local WOF agent, cos SOME light RV type things may be classed as cars. a van, perhaps?

SOO, the upshot it, :evil: bloody cops :evil: cant hide in the blind spot about 100 yrds back from my twuck, just waiting, lurking to fill they quotas!! :D :D

I checked at my local VTNZ station a while back about High Stops, he didnt look anything up, so was a little dubious about his responce, but it was, if its been fitted factory, it must have one. If it has factory mounts, it must have it fitted.

I have one in the back of my safari, its only ever in for 2 days of the year, Wof days. Its more of a safety issue. I cant see Jack behind me when its in. Its right in the middle (where you'd expect) but sits quite low, and it does block cars more than about 4-5 car lengths behind me.

Ive never tried to go through without it. Its only a 2 min job to fit, so I just put it in/out as required.

To clarify / quote the rules: :evil:

The definition of class MA is:
A passenger vehicle (other than a Class MB or Class MC vehicle) that has not more than nine seating positions (including the driver's seating position).

Some of the high stop light rules (part of rule 32005) are:
A motor vehicle of Class MA, first registered in New Zealand on or after 1 January 1990, must be fitted with one or two high-mounted stop lamps.

A vehicle retrofitted with a high-mounted stop lamp must comply with 5.3. (stuff about light specs, visibility etc etc)

The definition of a class MC vehicle is (most ORE members): 8)
A passenger vehicle, designed with special features for off-road operation, that has not more than nine seating positions (including the driver's seating position), and that:
has four-wheel drive; and
has at least four of the following characteristics when the vehicle is unladen on a level surface and the front wheels are parallel to the vehicle's longitudinal centre-line and the tyres are inflated to the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure:
an approach angle of not less than 28 degrees;
a breakover angle of not less than 14 degrees;
a departure angle of not less than 20 degrees;
a running clearance of not less than 200 mm;
a front-axle clearance, rear-axle clearance, or suspension clearance of not less than 175 mm.

End result for most ORE members vehicles is that high stop lights are optional, but must meet the rules if fitted. :wink:
