Any one dealt with this guy from Tauranga with his engines on trademe jk1968.
Also while I am dreaming a little,
How much bigger physically is a 454 compared to the lil 350?
Are parts etc more expensive for the Big blocks or harder to get?
Can I expect it to eat drive train parts?
Just figured my rod isnt a daily driver so to hell with the fuel economy figures, but I've still got to be a little cautious if I want to do a few long drive/tours. Dont want to tow a small tanker trailer to feed it.

Re: Chev bent eights (big and small)
The 454 or (later designated LS7) is a truck block and weighs in at around 300 kgs and has a weird combustion chamber design to produce torque as apposed to hp at lower rpm. It is still produced today although employs EFI.
There were(still are made in mexico) over 90 million 350 engines made.
this is the engine block though, not 90million 350 cubic inch engines, but the same block with varying capacities.
so i doubt there is a lack of parts. weighs in at around 260ish kgs
naturally the big block is wider.

Re: Chev bent eights (big and small)
b/b's are twice the size of s/b's
a full alloy B/b is the same weight as a full cast iron s/b
a b/b400 has shit loads more torque than a s/b400
and 454's are just not comparable with any s/b's
parts are still plentiful but may become dearer as time goes by
cost of fuel is governed by foot pressure and final drive gearing
where a s/b will have to do 1800 to 2400rpm to cruise at, a b/b can do it at 1200rpm
i would go b/b if i had the room and budget

If you want to move a mountain go the big block EVERYTHING and I do mean everything, just happens at lower revs
Re: Chev bent eights (big and small)
big blocks eat running gear
FJ40,INJECTED SB 406 CHEV, LOCKER,35 SIMEXS,warn winch , 80seies vx 4.2 24v turbo diesel ,fr and rear lockers 3" exh top mount intercooler, 021 724482
Re: Chev bent eights (big and small)
Yeah I think maybe a simple "little 350" might be the way to go.
Cheers guys.
Might put the silly idea back in the box ... for a while anyway.

Yeah I know.
Would've been a silly idea if I had suggested a blown or turboed 454. Now that would be silly

Re: Chev bent eights (big and small)
whats it going in? eg.. safari -bigblock posible. Hilux- too hard.
lots available for s/b conversion. shits and giggles go big block. how do you like to drive. if you like to put your foot up and get things howling either will smash things to bits. a big block will break everything at idle.
Me v8 have to be alloy and injected. probably LS 1,2 or 3.
You should go the b/b cause we all want to see it ...lol

Re: Chev bent eights (big and small)
does $3,000 sound good for a 454 with a tunnel ram and auto gearbox? and would a 454 break safari rear? for a rat rod.
Re: Chev bent eights (big and small)
Its for my FJ45 rat rod project and although I am moving away from the idea of a BB I have to admit that I would love to drop one into my Rod (idea hasnt completely been written off as stupid).
I dont drive too agressively (bit of a nanna really), but I know that if I have the chance everynow & then I would give the loud pedal a blip just because I could.
Chassis is going to be a cruiser one and rear axle still up for arguement. Might have to look for something a bit bigger than I thought neccessary just to extend its life and allow me to run some big rear rubber tahs.
My issue for axles is the stud pattern on the rears, id like them to match the fronts so I can carry just one spare. Might have to carry two on the tray anyway as the fronts will be quite a lot smaller than the rears.
Can a safari take the punishment of a Mild 454? I like the idea of putting the safari rear suspension in place of the leaf springs. The leaf springs would need some sort of track bar to stop it turning into spagetti and lunching the driveaxle and diff so the saf set up might be easier.
Tranny will be a th400 if I go BB, actually it will probably be the same as on the 350 if I go small block.
I wonder if the chrome dressup kits are available for the BB like they are for the SB. Gotta have some bling!!

im just using safari rear cause its what i had, but now that you mention it i suppose it would be better.
