KZJ-71/78 coolant capacity?

Post by IcedJohnno »

Hi all
I have just bought 4l of Toyota coolant/antifreeze and it talks of using a 50% mix.

Does anyone know what the capacity of the system is? Mine has the 2nd heater.

I could measure the coolant as I drain it out, but then I would not be able to drive off and get what I need!

Done a bit of searching but to no avail yet.

Cheers
John

Thanks Bill
Where did you find that info?
Does it include the lines & heater core etc for the rear heater?

that's from the service manual when doing a drain & fill

In the cruiser with the rear heater and draining from the block, it took 10 litres.

I'm running 50% so bought 2 x 4L, thought if I didnt use it all I'd just take it back.

di you get toyota red or green? what colour is in there now? as I was told it would need a complete flush to change colours....

hey for what its worth Johnno I always tip the first 4l pack of antifreeze in followed by 4l of water then tip in equal quantidies of antifreeze from the second pack and water to top the system up till its full then I'm left with 2/3 of a pack of antifreeze to stick on the shelf for next time :D

Thanks guys.
I like your idea Marty. Will do so too.

Bill. Yes upon looking, I'm going from Green to Red Toyo stuff.
Anyone know what the difference is between to two colours from Toyo?

I guess I will need to do a flush then.
Will drop the current stuff this eve, replace with water, and then replace tomorrow after the trip to work.
Hmm... maybe will start tomo having got some flush stuff first

You dont need flush stuff, just use water, just need to drain, fill, run, drain and then fill with your green. Or at least thats what I was told :-)

I was told by an old timer (owns a radiator shop) that the green stuff contains silicon silicates and some other ...ates where as the red stuff doesn't.
Apparently it's these are compounds that breakdown sooner hence the red stuff being known as "long-life".
That said he recommended replacing the red stuff ever 5 years as opposed to the green stuff every 2 years.

BUT...he also said once you've had the green stuff in your motor you'll never completely remove all the compounds unless the engine is stripped and the block is heated to 300C to "cook" them out and that whether you use red or green you should plan on replacing it every 2 years.

I don't know how much truth there is in the story but I run green in my 1KZ and to this day have had no problems.
