1KZ-T Manual pump bleed

Post by micahb »

Ran out of fuel this morning.
well it never actually spluttered to a stop, just spluttered and drove slower half the way to work. Filled up and now cant bleed the fuel through the pump. trickles out enough to idle but not to run with any load.
Tractors etc have one or two bleed points on the pump for this purpose.
Cant find any on my pump in the 4wd. Any of you others who have a manual pumped 1kz had this problem?
Was fun driving home from work, 35km in low range idling along.

Nope, but I haven't run it out of fuel...
Even when I put it in for the first time.. Just primed it with the pump on the filter....
After a few revolutions on the starter it sprang into life...

It should be the same as having a 3L or similar diesel in the old Hilux...

Are you sure it was a low fuel problem... Or water from the bottom of the tank????

yeah same here with the first time running. now it idles fine but will missfire bad if you try to drive. might pull out the tank, give it a birthday clean and start again from the top. did drain out the filter and there was bugger all water in there. like a teaspoon worth if that. (although that might be coz its already in the pump!) fuel light was well on. had forgotten to fill up night before.

Went back to basics, so drained/cleaned tank, blew out lines and replaced filter (was near blocked). now the problem is still there just not as bad. its pulling a whole lot more fuel through, ie can drive down the flats ok with moderate throttle but when you need more power like for a hill , just coughes and splutters. its still not getting enough fuel. Cant seem to be able to pump fuel through with the little diaphram pump on top of filter either. Never had one of those fail, but if that failed, would it produce these symptoms?
Hope i haven't somehow damaged the pump.

IF you have a small electric fuel pump, you can try put it on the injector pump side of the fuel filter and suck it threw that way. this will show you if there is a blockage/restriction in the flow to injector pump, by thr amount of fuel coming out of the electric pump.

PM if you need

Yeah i am under the impression that if the primer is stuffed it will leak and allow air through. This could possibly allow air through when the engine is running but also when its not causing fuel to back flow back into the tank making it hard to start and also causing a long delay before the system is primed again. If it is leaking as well it could cause the re priming to be slower than usual. You can either do what Lawrence said or when i rebuilt my engine and had problems priming it, I got a rag and an air gun and tightly shoved it in the fuel filler with the airgun also jammed in and pressurised the tank that way. It doesn't take much pressure to cause fuel to come flying out. You will need to disconnect the fuel line at the primer. This will show if there is a blockage in the fuel line from sucking crap up. I am not sure how much fuel the primmer pumps but try sticking your finger over the inlet to the primmer and see if you can feel it sucking.

Its a bit like bleeding brakes. Start at one end and move along. The other thing could be a stuffed or blocked fuel shut off solenoid. As it is a solenoid valve it may be slightly blocked as it works as a restriction. I believe they are on the top of the pump. Try looking at that maybe

Cheers guys, all sorted. was the primer thing that the filter attaches to. was full of crud and diaphram buggered. found another and chucked it on, then used a little 12v fuel pump to suck it through. worked a treat. good to have it going again. was freaking out a bit thinking i might have somehow damaged my pump. (i know it wouldn't have, but it cost me lots of money so i couldn't not worry just a little.)
