Hi, I have a manual 96 Surf, and I have noticed that when taking off in 4wd there is a whine type noise for a second, any thoughts on what this could be?
Thanks

Re: Noise in 4WD
possible dry front output bearing until its done a couple of revolutions, then lubes up with a bit of oil around it
may pay to check level or replace trans box oil

Re: Noise in 4WD
Thanks. It does it every time I stop and start, not just the first time I put it into 4wd and I have also noticed it does it sometimes when changing down gears and slowing down. It seems to only be under strain, so taking off under power or coming down the gears quite hard. It is almost a squeek sound, has me beat, but I will try changing the oil and see if this helps. Cheers

Re: Noise in 4WD
any more info before we keep trying to do the remote Internet diagnosis
start checking for worn gearbox mount bushes and look at front diff mounting as well
might even be front diff or dry/worn cvs

that's a thrust issue.
the thrust forward or back is caused be applying torque or twist to two helical cut gears. as they move toward each other it applies pressure either forward or backward on the two shafts involved.
In this case it could be something as simple as a slightly worn pinion shaft bearing or as major as a thrust bearing on an internal shaft with in the gearbox.
If you can hear the noise in all five gears it will be either the input or out put shaft or the pinion bearings on the front diff are worn.
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.

Thanks, I will look into it.
