I'm looking at getting the engine in my safari recon'd, it's still in an average state at the moment but thinking ahead a little bit, is there anyone in kapiti that does this?

I can definitely recommend Steve Hunwick at :
Automotive Reconditioners

Otaki

He used to be in Porirua many, many years ago and did all our families engines. And that was quite a few.

I would be a little nervous of someone who is selling a fully reconditioned TD42 engine with:
a new cambelt when the engine does not have a cam belt.
and
a cleaned and prepped Oil pump- this should be new as it is a very important component and not much in a $4,500 recond engine
and
Block bored oversize for new pistons, honed and fitted with new rings - These engines have liners in them they do not get re bored oversize at overhaul time.

er no ,mines bored +050 thou oversize ,STA sell oversize pistons sets ,mainly for TD 2.7s but Pistons are same in both engines.
Oil pumps. are $1100 item long as it's not worn out ok to reuse.
that puts your rebuild up to over 8k if you start replacing liners.

Yea I don't do lines when we rebuild them , we go 20 thou oversized , We can also do motors , exchange ,
Trust me you don't want to use custom works , I had a customer get an exchange engine was the wrong block , tappet cover was snapped and 3 bonded together , oil leaks from everywhere had a hektik internal noise and in the end had to go back to them , it was a silicone assembled special that is for sure ,

Also we always renew the rocker shaft and re face the rockers when doing the td42s ,

Hi,
I am a little confused here with some of the replies above.
The manual I have only gives one dimension for the bore of a TD42 so I am guessing this oversize piston arangement is an after market thing and the original liners are bored out to suit the new pistons. Is this correct? How far can they be bored out before the liner walls are too thin?
Where are you guys buying your re build kits from and how much are they?

I am still keen to know if the above mentioned are actually boring out the standard liners for these over sized pistons or not

yes it is, the liners are quite thick, mine doesn't run hot at all unlike my 0.20 oversize Cleveland 351 did.
its miro balanced engine, clutch, flywheel, the whole assy was done, spins loverly

Hi, The thread title is TD42, the page you posted is for a TB42.
Here is the same page from the TD42 Engine Section of the manual, replacing the liner is mentioned twice on that page and re boring is not although I have seen elsewhere where the parent bores can go out of round and need to be bored out and sleeved prior to inserting a standard liner.

no point saying oversize pistons aren't available and you cant bore the liners coz its already been done
