Hello everyone and anyone, I've been browsing over 4WD sites trying to find any info on modifying an 85' Hilux Surf SR- 4cyl 2L petrol 5spd man. I've had my hilux for a while now and I'm getting very keen on doing sum mod's. Can anyone give me some direction on modifications, eg. Suspension lifts, shocks, anything I can do to the diffs or upgrading?? This is my daily driver so I'd like to keep things road legal.
Cheers all...

Re: 85' SR Hilux Surf
Welcome aboard.
The following is my build as it goes. Everything had been tried and tested on other rigs. As it's my first build and I'm only learning, the mods being pretty easy suit me and give good performance.
What are you trying to achieve is the biggest question. You can just buy bolt in lift springs and hey presto. But I wanted more flex and huge tyres so further mods were required.
There is plenty of info around on the mods I have done and other peoples Hilux mods too.

Good luck, Keep us posted.

Re: 85' SR Hilux Surf
put a commy 3.8 v6 into it and save yourself some gas money (fuel economy on mine got better with more power aswel
). get some maxitrac lifted springs off supralux and extended shackles. long shocks, then find an lsd for front and rear with some big beefy tyres and you'll be away laughing.

Re: 85' SR Hilux Surf
My plans are to raise the Surf to stop the poor old girl getting batterd, and to fit some biger tyres under the guards for more clearence. This is my first 4WD and first real experience with 4 wheel driving so I'm a bit unclear in direction and where to start.
The only real chance I've had of gaining any knowledge was when I followed a club up Thompsons Track, the guys helped me out alot and I learnt alot. Also I've noticed that the Auto Hubs are'nt always locked in while in 4WD, will replacing these with manual Hubs be an easy fix??
Any info or advice at all will be appreciated.
Cheers, Scott
