Divorcing a Pajero Transfer case

Post by yorick »

The three Diamond Paj is going to get a 3 pointed Star Transplant. The good thing about Mercedes trans' is the output shaft has a rubber donut on a fixed output shaft and the stall speed is way lower than the Paj. So I want to divorce the transfer case so I can use the Merc Trans. I have an L200 Diesel gear box and transfer case that I can experiment on. Anyone had any experience with divorcing Paj Transfer cases and are the auto and manual cases the same?

If anyone has a schematic of the internals of a Pajero transfer box, a scan would be appreciated.

I think the input shafts are different for the auto and manual. But the ratio and everything is the same.

Why are you putting a star transfer case in it?

I'm using the Merc Auto with the Paj Transfer Case. Mainly because the stall speed on the Merc is way lower. It takes a pretty firm foot on the brake to stop a Merc Auto. When you're creeping around a sidling it's good to be able forget about it stopping when it's idling. Also I think modding the transfer case will be easier than adapting the Paj auto to a Merc.

What side is the output on the Merc? Maybe use the transfer case as well if it was the LHS as chances are it will have a better low ratio - or is coming from a car?

Are you going to do a bit of mcgyver to get the 4D56 to the merc trans or engine swap as well?

Why not use a nissan devorced transfer case? They handle big horsepower. And there is no re-engineering of bearing cases and seals etc.

If I had a Merc transfer case that would be cool, cos I'd have a G-wagen! :) Trans is a car one but they're the same as what's in a G. (G-Wagens have a divorced Transfer case and either a Merc Auto or a Getrag manual) The four speed Merc Autos have a stump puller bottom gear which is designed for loaded hill starts, but is rarely used otherwise. The idea is to whack in a Merc Motor. I have a choice, either 2.3 4cyl which is really torquey or a 3.5 litre V8. My preference would be a e320 or e350 V6 but I don't have one of those lying round the shed, so the likely candidate is the V8 as long as I can get it to fit. :)

I think the output on the Nissan is the wrong side, but if I'm wrong that would be great. That's the one off the 720 isn't it, it wouldn't be big horsepower cos I'm not that into big neddys, I'm more into tar pealing torque from 10 revs! :D
