Hilux Surf Brakes and wheel Bearings

Post by penetrator »

Hey guys just took my surf for a WOF and to pass i need to adjust the travel and performance of the handbrake - is there a relatively simple way to do this ie: tighting a bolt etc or is it a bit more complicated?

The other thing he mentioned was that the front wheel bearings have a little bit of play in them - he said theyll pass this time but need some work on them for the next warrant. What is involved in fixing those - do you you need to buy new bearings or just adjust them and can i do this myself he quoted about $105 a wheel to do it.
Cheers Guys

 $105 each wheel for adjusting them ! ! ! JEEEZUZ !

do it your self man, super simple to do, hard to explain, i think there is a thread where someone else has asked the same question about how to adjust front wheel bearings, be best to read that. and handbreak well,,,, depends on how worn the linings are but you would be able to do that as well, its really easy but also hard to explain. there is a lot of guys down there on this site and im sure if you asked nicely one of them would be able to guide you in the right direction, if you were in hamms i could "assist" you as you did it your self but... long way to go to get a small job done,

so in short "you can dooo eeet" save the coin man and learn your potential

Cherss wopass i thought the handbrake would be pretty simple to do myself i know the pad linings are ok so will just look at tightening the cable i guess.
Any idea where i could find the article about the wheel bearings you mentioned was on here?

hand break

Post by wopass »

with the handbrerak mate, dont just tighten the cable, in fact back the cable off, this makes adjusting the shoes more effective,

back the cable off at the adjuster underneath the truck, wop the back wheels off it, pop the drums off, clean everything out, wear a dust mask as break dust is BAD, blow it out with compressed air or with a brush if you dont have a compressor like me  on the shoe links is an adjustor or on the wheen cylider itself ( been a long time since ive done a lux break service) anyway, adjust the shoes out to the drum so that they are just touching, you should be able to turn the wheel by hand with minimal effort, then adjust the handbreak cable to suit :D there ya go break service in a nut shell.... ohh then bleed them to get any shit out that you have disturbed

Cheers mate sounds like a relatively easy job to do this weekend will let you know how it goes. And yes she is drum in the back
By the way with those front wheel bearings the truck has the automatic hubs does that make alot of difference to adjusting them?

Yeah i started off hunting sika in the kawekas - im originally from hastings before i came to christchurch for uni. some good country up there aye? Im looking at getting into handloading too when i can afford the $$$ for the setup is so hard to find a shop that sells consistently one brand of ammo for the 7x57. Shoots real well with PMC and Federal factory loads about 1 inch groups.

Shot a couple of chamois out to 450m with it too so goes the distance - i went up for a chamois last week and me and the other guy both got one he used a .222 and dropped it allright but my one makes a hell of mess were
it hits

You ever come down this way for a hunt or 4WD?

hunting

Post by wopass »

as soon as i get a bit more financial ill be looking at heading south for a hunt, my dad has been up in the tops out te anau way, i think thats where he went, got himself a nice shammy trophy, about 4 weeks ago, fit strong basterd, he can still out walk/out carry/out shoot me

hey did you see that .50 BMG that sold for 6k on trade me? now that would have made a great long range shooter, or theres a guy selling a 338 lapua now to, that would also make a nice shooter,,, ahh the things im gonna do when i manage to pull a decent wage :D

hey Jaf, whats the case size of the 7mm 08 relative to, is it the same as the .308 case? or are they fatter, still a medium action eh?

Hey guys just another quick question - im going to change the diff and transmissions oils this weekend when i fix that hand brake and was wondering in the surfs is there a seperate drain and filler plug for the transfer case and gearbox or is it all combined through the gear box filler etc? and i need to put breathers on the gear box same thing - does the transfer case have its own breather or is it combined with the gearbox too?
Cheers fullas

Post by wopass »

all seperate  cheak/fill plug for the G box is on the pasenger side mid box and the T case is on the rear side middle'ish and both drains are,,,, you guessed it, on the bottom of each, 24mm from memory :?

diffs, well they are right where you think they would be  again 24mm i think.use a single hex socket for these plugs as they will be VERY tight and if you use a crescent or multi hex spanner you are likely to round the head of the plug. if you dont have single hex sockets the spanner is the next best thing.. DO NOT USE AN ADJUSTABLE CRESCENT.
