Motor runs fine, but has a snapped glow plug in the head that can't be removed, and I can't find a replacement head (although I may have to pick one up in oz if I have to).
Need to get it up and running, so if need be, will throw another motor in, or at least buy a complete one for the head

Considered the TD42, but I need to run the GU model box apparently, as there is no room for the GQ ones around the tranny tunnel, so even that could be hard to source :x

Oh well, just my latest run of bad luck with vehicles

That seems very strange to me Dave??

They can't remove it??

So your consiering getting a new head for it??

Which would indicate the current head has to come off..........

Which would mean that once the head is sitting on the bench they could drill the remains of the glow plug out........

Once the remains of the plug has been removed they could either re-tap the thread or use a Heli-coil, or just weld the hole closed (the engine will start ok, might just miss a bit for a couple seconds when very cold).

Anyways, pretty sure you can buy aftermarket Cylinder heads for these engines off the shelf from a place in Tauranga.

Head is off, and they have drilled as far as they can, but have reached the tip of the plug, and its just breaking off the drills, and its that tight, the ezi outs are getting close to breaking point.
They can't even get it out heating it and trying to extract it

Have tried most places for cylinder heads, but mine is odd ball having the oil squirter for the cam, and is $2500 plus freight plus GST ex Japan, and if it is the wrong one, too bad, I have to keep it

Closest I have found is in oz, but the freight is the killer, still well over $2200 landed, just waiting for photos to confirm its the same, so still looking into relacement motors to strip the head, or at worst, a repower with a TD42 and box.

I was considering just bolting the thing back together again, but it seems a waste considering the amount of labour its cost to get this far, so would prefer to get it done right this time, but things aren't looking too promising at the moment

Did you buy this knowing the glowplug was broken?..or did you break it?

If neither of the above and it was purchased from a dealer (preferably reasonably recently) you may get it covered under the CGA.

Dave
Have those doing the work considered spark eroding the glow plug out?
This will be very effective and will not snap off one of those goddamn ezi-outs. (badly named)

Spark eroding is used all the time for such problems and is available at most good toolmaking firms.
If you are really stuck Mace Engineering in Chch can do this and even they would be cheaper than a new head, let alone another whole motor job

Since I purchased it through Trade Me, even though it was a licenced dealer, there is no comeback as it was an auction, which I soon realised after I paid for it and had trouble starting it to take it away

Never heard of spark eroding, and it may very well be the answer to my problems, thanks very much for the tip, will give Mace a call and have a chat in the morning, will keep you updated.

Suggest you try other Toolmakers first, there may even be someone up your way that does this. Let the fingers do the walking and all that.
Am not dissing Mace, I used to work for them, but you will find others around that can put more hours into less dollars.
Spark eroding works by using a carbon electrode to arc its way thru the problem component. Can be very accurate if so desired.

If you have no joy, ring Troy at Contex Engineers Ltd, ph 03 381 1557. Contex have made some significantly large and complex dies to my design for die-casting aluminium components for my work at SKOPE. I don't think Contex have their own sparking machine but I know they use other ones as well as the ones at Mace, for complex shapes in the fully hardened die-steel.

Dave

do you happen to know anyone out at woodburne, they have all the gear, eroder etc. Well did have 18yrs ago. Our usual charge then was a packet of choc biscuits, not sure what inflation will have done to it.

The old man works out there again, as a civilian now, so might pay him a visit and see what he can come up with

They used to have a spark erroder out there. If the operator was good you wont even have to repair the threads when it is erroded out. I seem to remember it was in the machine shop.

Does the SIN state it was sold by auction?
I'm pretty sure for that to be the case the dealer needs to start the auction with no reserve (ie. $1) and be a licensed auctioneer as although listings in trademe are referred to as 'auctions' i think you'll find that legally they not (in most cases).

I'd get in touch with MVDT - 0800-3676838 to be sure on where you stand.

Just got this from the trademe t&c's...

# SPECIFIC WARNINGS

2.1 The services: Trade Me provides a venue to introduce members who want to buy and sell items. Trade Me does not take any part in the sale of items other than by providing our Website as a venue for members. If a bid is accepted by a seller, a contract of sale will be formed between the buyer and the seller directly. We do not act as agent for either party and do not participate in any sale or transaction between you and other members, including where you use the credit card service. If you use the credit card service, we simply pass on payments made by one member to another. As a result, even though some of the services are being referred to as an auction, Trade Me is not an auctioneer (whether under the Auctioneers Act 1928 or otherwise).

and this

If you sell six or more vehicles in a year, you are likely to be a motor vehicle trader and must be registered. Motor Vehicle Traders selling cars online by auction must attach a SIN to their listing (e.g. through a photo) and provide the SIN to the successful buyer. For more information visit the Motor Vehicle Traders Register website.

If the dealer didn't list in accordance with the auction requirements for motor vehicles then the sale must be the same as had you walked in off the street. :?

Isn't someone on here a RMVT?...may be they could shed a little more light on the matter
