Hilux LSD - Only one type??

Post by Cloggy_NZ »

A question for all you Toyota guru's out there...
Is there only one type of LSD fitted to Hilux's or are there several different varieties?
And if there are more than one type, which is the best and how do you tell them apart?
Looking at one like this

1992 Land Rover Discovery V8i, 5 speed, 12000lbs winch, Salisbury rear, 110 front, 65mm spring lift, dents in every panel, Rallywoods pinstriping.

If you are talking about the OEM ones from the ones I have seen they are all the same or minor differences in carrier, from memory I think the v6 has slightly larger clutch pack but dont see a reference to a difference in the manual. The toyota LSD is not the best design it is built to give the best road manners rather than the best traction. They can be tightened but I havent yet had mine apart to do this but from people who have it is a pretty easy process to shim.

There are after market LSD units but for the cost save and going to a lunchbox locker would be better but price is a factor and with good limited slip oil and some tightening they give good traction.

Personally I prefer the LSD in the front to reduce the stress on the birfields (can't justify the cost of going to longfields).
Legal disclaimer: Any information I may have provided is worth exactly what you paid me for it.

Thanks guys,
I am looking at one to put in the front of my Land Rover Discovery. Being full-time four wheel drive I can't use an auto locker. A limited slip would suit my needs at the moment. Hilux carriers are easily modified to accept the Rover crownwheel and Rover carrier bearings and so fit into the standard Land Rover diff head. Howatt Engineering can do this for me as well as make some axles to fit the carrier and go into Land Rover 110 CV's. That should make for an almost bullet proof front end for the punishment I am going to give it (only running 32" tyres at the moment)
