Click - winch solinoids

Post by NJV6 »

Warn XD9000, std 4.6 hp motor and std warn solinoids.

My winch is not particually old, (coming up 2 years). The solinoids were on the front, in the weather, and would get the odd dunking.

I have had to pull two of them apart before to clean them out to get them to work again, but today after giving the winch a service, was working fine, just as I went to wind the rope on it then just stopped and goes click, will wind out, but not in.

Don't want to pull them apart again as it is a fiddly job so what are the options some of you have used? I have read of Titan ones, I just want something reliable!

Suggestions? (no not a PTO - unless someone is a going to make me a gear for the transfer case and fit a factory one)

When mine went out but not in it was brushes not soleniods. You need to take it to an auto elecy to isolate the problem. I would put money on it being brushes.

You may be right but I have had the motor checked out and modified to improve the earthing system which is pretty marginal on these motors. THe winch motor ahs not done much work and was in good condition.

From a few seach's on outers I found the warn solinoids are a bit dodgy anyway, and I get a more solid clunk from them when winding out than trying to wind in.

Swap them over and see if the fault moves to the winding out if not it will be the brushes  So simple I had to suggest it :P

this will prove the winch itself, and prob get the spool wound in anyway if it is a solenoid

I should have been clearer.

The web site say's rated to 100amps continuous, up to 180 at 30% duty cycle.

How does this work for when I have it loaded up at 400amps for a minute in the horrible southland goo?

You may want to look into Marine sxolenoids they run some pretty big currents through anchor and net winches.

there is also this

The Warn solenoids are crap! The only solution is to replace them. If you want them to last any length of time you need to keep them out of the weather. They are after all an electric switch! I have one like what Warren is selling on my wife's truck that has a standard 8274 on it. They are an OK solenoid but all they are is a standard solenoid inside a waterproof box. Don't for a mintue think they are any different. They are a pretty good option if you can't get it away from the weather any other way.
On my winch truck I have been using Come-Up solenoids for the past 3 years. (available from your local ARB agent) I have them inside the cab so are out of the weather and they have been running the 7.8hp 24v since I got it in the middle of 2005. These same solenoids are now controlling the 6hp Warn motors that I'm running 24v though. So these can handle a 6hp 12v motor with 24v. Someone can tell you how much this would draw but It has to be a lot when you see the strain it puts on the charging system I have.

Anything you do will require a different wiring setup as I'm guessing you currently have a 4 solenoid setup and you'll be going to either a 2 solenoid setup or sealed unit that has everything in one unit.
