Re: longfields
Has anyone had good or bad experiences with these
Re: longfields
hey mark ,wopass has these in his truck and from what i can gather he loves them. i'm in two minds about them myself as i would rather change a cv than rebuild a diff or transfer case etc.

I suppose its a fine line, hate changing CVs but i agree a diff is worse, be great to try them to see

Re: longfields
Why would you blow a diff or transfer?
If you think rationally, instead of negatively, what do you really think can be made the weak link in the drive line?
You need something that is easy to get at, easy to fix, and easy to refit.
And if you answered driveshaft, then you are on to it.
If you boys are worried about breaking diff heads and transfer cases, then Longfields are not for you, as you have some much more serious weakness problems to worry about.
I run a 5.0 ltr injected v8 with torque multiplying auto and 40" tyres behind 'lux diff heads and transfer cases and have never had an issue with a front diff head or transfer case. I personally haven't spun a drive shaft either, but have been on plenty of trips where they have been twisted up.
I have also been on plenty of trips where CV's are blown, 4 in 2hrs over 3 trucks was my best count, and when you are in the middle of a nuggety gorge, or near the top of the Southern Alps, replacing cv's is no fun at all. But since the boys swapped over to 30 spline longfields, no one has done a cv. Although last time out I did blow an Asin freewheel hub gear.

Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

Do you run light driveshafts so you dont blow diffs???
Re: longfields
just standard drive shafts, infact rochound runs a stronger one. your not gonna start blowing diffs and transfer casses by running longs. hell mike and chopper were running 200:1 with dual cases and 4.7 gears and not peeling diffs. the drive shafts useally went due to big rock garks
Re: longfields
all you rock crawling guys running these axles, is your driving mainly slow stuff? i have been thinking about going to them but as a few others have pointed out i would break a cv than a diff head as i generally drive quite fast at full note
Re: longfields
a lot of people run them from fast to slow applications,

My thoughts as well, 6000 rpm with a wheel off the ground then gaining traction? whats breaking next ??
Re: longfields
a free wheeling hub would blow long before a diff or T case, i know what i would rather be replacing on the side of a track.
in fact in the first round of the laurie sanson i had the chev wound up
to get up a gut and blew a free wheeling hub clean off about half way up, luckily for me i had a locker and longfields and i still made it to the top
, had i not had longs i would surely have blowen at least one of the CV's and not made the finish pegs for the zero. and was still able to carry on in 3wd

Re: longfields
the guys i know of that are running the same set up as me with hilux running gear have all gone to safari diffs, why would they do this? it would be cheaper to buy longs than set up safari diffs with new ratio's and lockers,my main concern is if i buy longs, will i not break my diff heads
Re: longfields
cause they dont know abouit longs???? they want to drag their diffs on the ground,
look how many top drag cars in nz and aussy run hilux diffs.

Re: longfields
Some go to the Safari diff because of the weight (they are heave suckers) Safari running gear in a hilux is almost the same as swapping in longs, They run Long's in all sorts and give them a hammering I have seen them running spool's (solid diff) drive line shock goes to the weakest link in a hilux with long's that is the free wheeling hub.
Longs are stronger than the cruiser stuff same goes for the safari stuff, if you have a locker in the front the leverage forces in the birfield or cv can be massive, longfields remove the problems in the standard equiptment. I don't have a locker up front if I did longfields would be in there
