hilux diff breathers

I now have water in my diffs so when i replace that oil i want to extend my diff breathers, I own a 1991 hilux surf with an earlier surfs solid front axle in the front. What do i need to extend the breathers, how do i do it, and where do you extend the rear breather to?

I grabbed a kit off trademe, not sure if they are still available.

Basically it was just a couple of fittings which most decent parts stores should carry, plus some clear plastic tubing.

Both my breathers come up to the airbox in the engine bay, took a bit more line but was easy to do. Had two fittings brazed onto the airbox. Zip tied the line all the way.

looked on trademe and cant find the kit for sale, Do you know the name of parts? are they nipples of some sort and what size?

Not sure of the size but if you took the existing breather off and went to a parts store you should be able to match something up.

They are basically just tee fittings for the hose to slide over and then thread into the diff housing.

i have put breathers on my LN 107 and just used the snap lock air fittings and air line hose. this works really well. Think the thread is 3/8 BSP and is the same in the diffs. cost me about $40 from memory and took about 45 minutes to do. I have done a fare bit of river work and have had no issues with water in the oil. As these fitings are air tight they work well. cheers

ok found some fittings and extended the diff breathers up into the cabin, took the hilux down to the waimak and found some deep water to play in, got my carpet wet and headlights full of water then went home to check the diff oil again,
the rear diff was sweet but the front diff still got water in it. Is this normal? do i just deed new seals or is this unavoidable playing in deep water?

OK you have two options you can put pressure into the diff (3 psi or so) to prevent the quick cooling effect sucking up water, you could look to see if your seals are leaking anywhere (usualy behind the nuckles) and replace the seals or finally it could have been you didn't get all the water and oil out of the front the first time.

Keep an eye on the front breather when flexed mine can come loose again, I usualy check mine every trip especially if I raced into a section of water .

the seals take a bit of time to fit and if water is getting in usualy you see some oil getting out.

I got my fittings from burnsco marine as they were open sunday.
I am pretty confident I got most of the water out of the front diff, so will look at the seals and pressurizing the diffs sound like a good idea, wish i had bought more hose now though
