3B Diesel Hard Starting

Post by Pete »

It must be the season for these problems.....

I have a BJ73 with the 3B motor. Having trouble starting from cold. Have replaced glow plugs as two had tested dead. I think they had been crook for a long time. But the main issue is clouds of white smoke and rough running as it fires after approx 10 seconds cranking. I am confident head gasket is OK as there is no coolant loss and when motor is warm it runs fine. I am going to start checking for any leaks in the fuel lines and will try handpriming to see of this helps.

Can anyone tell me what voltage I should see across the glow plug rail ? The timeR appears to work as the light goes out and I can hear the relay clicking.

Anything else to check ?

Cheers,

Pete

Some progress haven't checked glow plug voltage ( coudn't find multimeter) but after a priming pump with the button on top of the fuel filter bracket it starts OK with no smoke ? Must be a leak somewhere but not losing any diesel that I can see ?
Anyone had the same problem ?

hi,i had a similar prob with my pajero, found out that i had a very small hole in one of the fuel lines and was suxing in air, would fire after a long time of turning it over.try fitting a clear hose from filter to injecter pump and see if you get any air coming though and put a clear line on the return from pump.i used a second container to catch it rather than run it back to tank.

air before injecter pump check fuel filter lines and tank air out of injecter pump mite have done a seal

ive an interesting thing similer in my 13bt.it never needed glowing, you just went out in freezing conditions and bang started strait off even under 2 inch of snow in queenstown any time, the preheat light has always stayed on and as for glow plugs well me and my mates cannot find them nor can we find any fuse box in the truck, she was fairly modded when i got it so am guessing the fuses may have been re located, but no glow plugs that i can see,i was told by a mate that it may have glow plug in the intake manifold but havent checked that, once the outside temp warms up say around 10am itl start no problem and run great, ill have to get it sorted soon but i have a few other bits to sort first
on my 3rd POS 70 cruiser still havent learnt

Hi,

Have pretty much sorted it - well at least i know what the problem is..... After having replaced the glow plugs and batterys ( the batterys had well had it) I had a closer look at one of ther old glow plugs amd found they were marked as 14v ? The new ones are 24 v - but are supposedly for a 3b motor. i have only 12-13v across the glow plug rail so I will replace again with 14v plugs. It starts OK now if I repeatedly heat the plugs - ie turn ignition on and off about 4 x before cranking.

Zookfest i think the 13bts have a heater element in the air intake instead of glow plugs ?

Thanks ,

Pete

I had a similar problem...my truck has 24v accross the glow plug rail....most are 14v I am told, evidently there was only a short run of 24v glow plug motors, most should be 14v, why the difference, I dunno I kinda wish Toyota had standardised the set up instead of running two voltages.
No matter the problem, the answer is always give it more gas.......

Yeah me too.....I will try and negotiate a good price on a 2nd set of plugs - i don't expect the supplier to refund on the first set but its a bugger having to fork out again. Whever I buy parts I usually take out the old part first and compare it to the new - now i know why !!! This time i got lazy.....
