morning gents - as you can see im a nubee here - but am looking for a bit of guidance regards purchasing a 110.
am currently considering this one
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 625088.htm
unfortunately i have no previous experience with this type of lorry - until now ive only had four cylinder petrol cars - but i am considering the landie because i want something as a bit of an expedition vehicle - i go up north spearfishing - and the intention is to live out of the back of it for a few days at a time.
my main concerns are running costs and reliability/performance of the 110.
it is advertised as a 3litre engine - but i cant find any listing of a LR 3l diesel - is it just the N/A 2.5 motor? if so, would this truck be able to do 100km/h down the motorway without too much fuss or is it the sort of thing which is more comfortable at 85-90km/h? its likely that i will replace the radiator/fan with a new core and a thermo-elec fan unit to increase reliabilty and engine output. should i also consider an elec water pump for it?
what are the ongoing costs of this sort of vehicle likely to be - bearing in mind that it isnt to be used as an offroad vehicle - and it will be garaged when not used. i see the firewall has been replaced which seems to be a common problem area for these lorries - what other major expenses are involved with keeping these things going? perhaps if i budgeted a couple thousand dollars a year for servicing/maintainence - would this be a reasonable expectation?
also - i have a source of waste canola oil - the intention is to convert it to biodiesel and tip it into the bum of the LR - my understanding is that other than replacing the fuel lines with more modern rubber, the engine should accomodate the fuel no problems?
lastly, its listed for about $10k - what do you think of the price - ive had a look around but there arent too many older diesel 110's to compare it to - i thought $8-9k would be more realisitic considering it is 20 years old and pretty low-tech compared to offerings from toyota and nissan of a similar age.
many thanks
marcus
looking to buy
Re: looking to buy
The engine is not an original Land Rover one. Looks like it was originally a V8 and has had engine repalced but not sure what though. Possibly either Mitsi, Mazda or Isuzu so chances are it is 3 litre.
If in good condition price is about right at $10k for station wagon. They seem to get better prices. It looks like an import so check it out carefully for rust etc in chassis. the different coloured blue on the bulkhead indicates that there has already been some rust repairs, but I am only guessing.
