Front drivetrain rebuild on an IFS Surf

Post by forester »

G'day all

My RHS half-shaft is sliding about on the IFS diff splines in a worrying way and there is gearbox oil everywhere. I can move it in and out about 2 cm and there is shiny metal showing (i.e. cleaner than the general dirt-encrusted grime of my truck. The truck also won't engage the front diff when i select 4 x 4. The half-shaft won't pull all the way out, either, so I'm figuring it's not broken off at the end.

What shall I do next?

Take the wheel and suspension components off and remove the half-shaft?

I have read the info about how to tear down a front suspension at 4crawler.com.

Your advice would be helluva welcome.

Cheers

Gerard

youve munched youre side gears (very common) :D

you can remove the frnt ifs housing and axle shafts without removing youre cvs(youre a clown if you dont)

what type of 4wd engagement does youre diff use???(ADD or NON LIVE HUB?)

NOTE ,YOU DONT WANT TO TRY AND REMOVE THE AXLE SHAFT ,JUST REPLACE THE WHOLE COMPLETE DIFF WITH BOTH AXLE SHAFTS STILL ALL BOLTED TOGETHER :D

IFS rebuild

NOW you tell me!

Well at least I know how to rebuild a front hub assembly. Intimately. I can now completely understand why you do it from the inside....

I had figured as much. Tempted to bowl the whole truck at this point since it is beginning to resemble a pile of spares.

Anyone got an IFS diff-and-shafts for me (reaches for Yellow Pages)?

PS it's one of those disconnect-at-diff numbers.

:? if you just want to replace the diff/housing and axle shafts i cant understand why you would want to create more labour for youre self by trying to remove the cvs etc.

undo youre inner cv that bolts to youre drive axle flange (i think x6 14m.m bolts )and a long extention on youre bar.

undo youre bottom arm balljoint (x4 bolts)

undo youre bottom shock mount.

now you want to space out the cv from the axle flange(inner)(a bit of wood etc, once youve created a gap on each side you have now made it so you can lower the whole housing etc
