I have just brought a 93 hilux surf ssr-g with a v6 motor in it, some people say that the heads are prone to cracking mine seems to run fine, btw its done 106000kms and its quite good i love it. I don't know if this is anything to go by but the temperature gauge stays a half all the time except in the mornings or cold. your thoughts please.
You mean its always at half, even when its not running? Sound like a sticky gauge or crook sender. Probably best to get that checked because you REALLY want to know when your truck is overheating (or not heating up, ie: someone removed the thermostat, ie: possible head problems).
If you just mean its always at half way when driving at normal operating temperature then I'd say thats probably pretty normal.
In the morning it sits on cold but when i drive about a k at 60 kms/h it eventually goes to half, people say the heads on them are bad, but i'm getting a bigger exhaust for it from maggos from the manifold to the tip at the end

Not in all cases. I once had a mini with the thermo removed and it used to overheat, put a new one back in and overheating problem solved. What happens is that the coolant is pumped through the radiator to fast as there is no thermostat to slow it down and it doesnt get a chance to cool down before entering the engine again.
youd know if your heads were cracked.. my head gasket went last week and cracked the heads! cost an arm and a leg to fix $2200
things to look for :
1 - Dirty water in radiator
2 - possibly oil leak, will drop down on to drive shaft
3 - white smoke coming from exhaust all the time
4 - white smoke when Reving
5 - slight knocking noise
6 - feels wierd when changing gear
some jap imports havnt been serived proberly because there only kept for a short time and dont put anti frezze or maintain
All trucks can be prone to blowing things its just one of those things... and doing the things we do with our trucks can excellerate the general ware and tare on things.. which is why maintainance is of such importance, i know from now on i will be doing more of it
Naa the engine Runs so quiet, once i didn't know it was on and i started it when it was on there is no smoke i revved it once just to the red line and my father couldn't see anything, it is so quiet and so much gruntier than my fathers terrano
Hey eatenfuller. For someone who knows everything, I'm surprised you didn't work out the tyre size. Mongrels are a monoform tyres. Retreaded from bead to bead. They rely on using second hand tyres that are in good nick. Therefore the standard size is the 33x12.5x15 in a BFG or Dunlop or whatever else makes the standard. Thats 12.5 inches wide!
And Steve is right. Not sure why we bother with you!!!!!
