The 19 Day Rebuild - LR Hybrid

Post by mike »

Started the old girl up on the weekend before the rain came and moved it into carport (vid to come) after it had been sitting for 8 months in the back yard. Took a little bit but it eventually ran and powered under its own steam to the edge of the carport where it died and so i just cranked it over in gear and got it in. Pulled the guards and front off so I could get the engine out, then the stupid weather hit and ruined my weekend!

List of things to do before the west coast trip on the 19th.

pull 3.5 out and split box and put it on 3.9
putt 3.9 back in whole.
wire 3.9 up.
do something with exhausts so they last the trip.
water proof electrics (from 3 wires to 3000000)
get snorkel system going
swap 33's from surf to LR
swap winch from surf to LR (should be very easy)
Make front hoop for roll protection (anyone got some spare roll bar material lying around unused? )
check brakes
change a few oils
make some rain protection
tie the a-frame to the roll bar which will double as spare wheel holder in the back.

lots of work so little time.

Anyone want to give me a hand to swap the engine out tonight? just need the old one out and the new one in sitting before i goto bed tonight. I've got the crane, access sorted, just need to drop the drive shafts, get at the rear gear box mounts, drop one exhaust, some pipes wiring etc, split the box put it back on the new one and lift the bitch in. simple.

This build is perfect as it will be ready for the sheffield mudplug. Last years one it was running a very sad 135hp (factory rating) and this year it will have a nice 3.9 efi with 196hp (factory rating) so should be a whole lot more fun.

Here's the POS at present.

Awesome, but only if your on this side of town jase  (hoon hay) I just need some man power to get the old one out (with help of crane) and put the box on the new engine. My dad maybe there but he is getting on a bit for heavy awkward stuff.

I'll let you know later on whats the go.

Cheers

Just got back in from outside. Everything has started to freeze including the doors on my car and the window wouldn't wind down!! Massive thanks to wayne for trekking out and helping me in he freezing cold, I owe you big as I definitely wouldn't have got it to the stage of getting it out ready for splitting, which is where Jase and chops turned up and gave the much needed help to get the box and engine out and split apart only to discover a stuff thrust bearing and clutch.

Big thanks guys and for braving a cold chch night to help a rover owner as well, just goes to show that jeep and toyota owners are a good bunch

Wondering how the L/R rebuild is going Mike?
Been a few days and nothing posted.
Wanting to lend my moral support from over here in Pomville as I don't think my arms will stretch far enough to be of much physical support.

hope all is going well and if you need anything from my motor give me a yell.

whoahahahahah sooooooooooo glad it was something so stupid as the fuel pump around the wrong way

Big ups to rex for supplying a wicked engine, youll be kicking yourself you let this one go when it wips the zuks but up that hill at rallywoods, just like the xr250 did with a flat tyre and marks big old fat slow nissan as well

Big ups to rex again for resupplying the wiring CD (also chris as well!) and finding the ecu plug diagrams on the net (that was a huge huge help)

Big ups for chops massive part n doubting the fuel pump was correct. Also jase for sitting there and painstaking double checking all the wiring. Your right though jase, working till 3am is so much more fun than dramas in town on the piss
