Hey guys thought i'd introduce my self and what i have Names Thornton and live in Auckland. I have a 96 xj limited and wanting to get into some 4x4ing. She's a stocker but have a few ideas of what i want to do with it
First thing is i have bought a set of 'sport' steel wheels to wrap in yet to decide tyres. Some i want to know what kind of tyre you all think is best for me to put on. Do a bit of sand driving up at muriwai but want to get into mud a bit more (looks better when i come home to the parents covered in it ) Gonna use the stock set for road use so the new tyres will only be used for offroading...whats your thoughts?

If you are going to be doing sand and mud I would stick to a radial, as a crossply will bury itself in sand.
I'll have to tout the Buckshots again. Had a set of 31's on each of my cherokees and performed well in the sand. Got 33s on the TJ now and have no issues. Had em dropped to 12psi in the sand and went well. Usually have the 33s at 14psi in the mud and dont see any issues there either.

You want agressive tyres that can dig in the mud and non agressive tyres that wont dig and will stay on top of the surface for sand driveing so something middle of the road would suit
Yea i actually found my road tyres to work alright in the sand as like you said the dont dig and glide over the top. Will look at the buckshots thanks XJ
OK i got my full license so i now can attack the jeep
First off i'm picking up a set of xj sport steel wheels tomorrow and most likely am going to wrap them in 31 inch buckshots. From what i've heard may need a bit of lift so have found a budget lift on www.4wd.com consists of coil spacers and extended rear shackles which say it provides about 1 1/2 - 2 inch of lift. ( will this be enough for 31's and i am aware i may need to trim)??
Another budget lift option for you could be ot contact "justjeep" on trademe and see what spacers he has in stock for your front coils. And for the rear there is a guy doing "lowering blocks" on trademe also, cant recall his member name. I got some off him to relift the lift (after it had sagged). He can make them to size and can also provide the u-bolts.
With the stock steel rims, you should be fine with 31's. Mine 2nd one was 2.5 inches (spring replacement, which turned into 3 inches with the added spacers) and they cleared just fine. The first one i did was 2 inches and also cleared with plenty to spare. It wasnt until i got -19mm offset rims that i got rub issues.

didnt quite get what you meant by the lowering blocks until a mate told me to check if its spring under or over. So now i know it all makes sense thats XJ..... Will the guy need to know the axle code so he can make them or something?

realisted i bought the jeep for cheap and could make some money on it and if i took it offroad and busted something i wouldnt so decided im selling it

Can't say that I understand or agree with your logic because Jeep parts aren't as expensive as people believe them to be. Besides they are really easy to work (except for the very newer ones).
No need for that kind of propaganda here. There will be no abuse here, as Jeep drivers are dignified and upstanding members of the community! farking mutter mutter wheres me gun mutter mutter mary lou go git yr brother out of hid bed mutter mutter we got some varmint hunting ta do! We would never resort to throwing disparaging remarks at others, even of the Toyota persuasion get them 'coon traps too......... and certainly the idea of snobbery is completely unwarrented. ... cmon famahlie, wes off to hang us some jappa drivers hide on da wall!
Yeti, the link on your PM didnt go anywhere. And my names Mark, not Wayne... we'll make a Jeep driver out of you yet!
