im not running them in a vitara, but in my landrover I am running sj413 spring bushes. in my trials truck im going to spin the bushes out of a block of rubber

Yeah this is for my trials toy. The std rubber mounts seem... well weak. The drivers side one looks like it is buggered(shakes and flexes like shit) but it isnt (visually). Might just replace it anyway.

Thought this might be a no frills way of removing any future problems (like an engine coming loose in a roll over - not that that is my goal of course).

I'd definitely pursue it if I were you. Every time I've ever done any serious engine work in a Vitara/escudo I've had to replace at least one of the factory mounts. The rubber just fails and shears off completely when it ages. They are definitely a weak point.

What style are your current engine mounts? Is it possible to make up something captive that uses the original mounts?

Vitara mounts are very similar to this, a non-captive rubber block in a steel cup.
