Intermittent Rev Counter Fault...

Post by Summit033 »

Got an intermittent fault with the rev counter on my 97 GU 2.8 Turbo, mostly at idle, will drop off, then flick back on etc. A few secs after it faults the engine management light comes on, and then off again when it comes back on. At high revs it seems OK, just fluffs about at idle revs.

Any ideas on where the rev counter pick up is? Is this likely to be the fault?

Any problems with driving it while the rev counter is playing up, more so the engine management light being on? i.e. with out a rev counter reading will the engine management system being having any problems...?

Any ideas / help appreciated, before I take it to Mr Nissan, hand over my wallet and bend over....... :(

Cheers

Hey
Sounds very similar to the same problems as the early model patrols & safaris had,,,not usually the pickup but the rev counter itself ,,my gq did exactly the same thing and pulled the instrument panel out and replaced the rev counter clock,, my mate at the wrecker sells lots,,,,fitted it and right as rain,,,, i do quite a bit of work for the local nissan dealer and the mechanics said the same ,,,,,hey worth asking the wreckers if they sell many that will give you an idea hope this helps

Thanks Bushrash, I would have probably started looking at the other end. Will call into the local 4x4 wreckers and see what I can find out.

Cheers.

My 80's did a similar thing, It was a bad earth/low voltage between the engine and chassis. Workshop forgot to bolt one of the earth straps back on after an engine swap, Took ages to find !!!

OK, whilst I had the truck in at at auto electricians, I got them to plug in their diagnostic tool to check any fault codes that this intermittent fault has thrown up. Came back with '11', which is Camshaft Position Sensor (Pump).

So I take it this is the cam position sensor in the fuel pump....?

Is this something I can pull off, spray a bit of electrical connector cleaner on and stick back on or is it a trip down to the Nissan dealer, or local Diesel specialist...?

Will have a hunt through the other forums, as this has popped up a few times.
There is a sensor on the No.1 injector, but may be different

Whats your email address? I have a PDF manual for the GU, and it has the diagnosis for the cam position sensor fault you describe (DTC11)

Found/Confirmed the problem - The camshaft position sensor in the fuel pump. Only $400 ex Aussie! Fortunately all this sensor is doing is taking a Rev reading, but does not effect fueling etc, for for $400 I think I will just put up with no rev counter at idle.....
