Escudo power steering

Post by Brad230 »

I have a groaning noise coming from the steering when turning. After searching I found another post about a dry seal in the box on vehicles that had been sitting for some time. This vehicle is my daily driver (Suzuki Escudo 1994 16V MPI), the reservoir is full, the belt is tensioned and I have tightened/checked all the hoses. Are there any other common problems that anyone knows about or would it be the seal in the box as previously posted? Many thanks...

Hi.

Can you feel a very slight vibration through the wheel when it's making the noise, and does it feel like the grinding noise is coming from the steering shaft?

If so, then it's pretty certain that it's just the steering seal. This is an incredibly common accurrence with the 'scuds.

Yeah, it does have vibration through the wheel. Is it a problem, or do they go like that with no worries? By the way, thanks for the reply.

If it's just the seal, no it is not a problem. It will sometimes (although not always) improve with lots of use, and there is an additive that can be added to the steering box to assist in softening the seals up again.

We have used it at work regularly in the past with some success. (Suzuki car-sales).

I don't know what it's called, or where you get it; we get a local workshop to put it in when we have a growling Escudo. If all else fails you could telephone our regular mechanical workshop (Gavin Petersen at "Top Of The South Service Centre") here in Nelson. He would be able to give you advice on it.

Cheers
