Great wagons. I have a 94 Tdi NZ new manual. It's done 330K now with history. Origional turbo, head, gearbox etc....

Still goes fine.

Points to look for -

Rust on door frames, boot floor, round the screen, inner wings.

Check for rain water leaks from sunroofs and small roof windows.

A 96 auto will probably be an import so check history if possible. Cambelts need doing at 60K

Check all electrics carefully too - ABS light will only go out after you move the car, check remote locking works, elec windows etc....

Motor on a 96 auto will be fly by wire so you can chip it for more grunt too.

Look for coolant leaks at the front of the motor and oil from the crank rear main - it's a designed in leak to stop the chassis from rusting!!

On road it should be tight and nice to drive - no rocketship but smooth and firm. Great family trucks with the seven seats too. We get 750K from a full tank (80l)

Off road they are awesome in standard from. Loads of flex even with the anti-roll-bars.

If you want to mod it there are loads of people who have done it all so advice and tips are easy to get. Bits can be pricy tho'

Hope that helps.

Hey thanks for the info. But ive decided not to buy that one now the other half not to happy about me spending $12000 at the mo. A mate put me onto a cheaper one for $3000 its only a 1993 diesel and its 5 speed 230000km motor seems to run sweet but has a exhaust manifold leak. The guy said its been real reliable and its pretty tidy twin sun roofs alloys factory bull bar and ladder thing at the back. What do you think about this model
(anyone keen on a terrano)

Pretty much same as later one except less to go wrong but more chance of rust. Turbo should come in strong at 1900 rpm.

Double check it's the manifold as no4 head gasket can blow at the very back of the head near the firewall and it makes a similar pftt pftt noise.

looked in to the 93 model and id say your bang on with the head gasket leak. There is no black around the exhaust but a lot of oil down the back of the motor. So will give it a miss and keep looking thanks for the info
