Hi Craig,
give the starter solinoid & starter a hit with a hammer, then try again!

If you look at the starter motor it has a small tubey looking bit on it on the side - thats the solenoid. They get mud in them and then you don't get the proper electrical contact. The click is the solenoid operating, so its working that far, so probably the contacts...

You should pull it down and clean it - but as Tim said... give it a few good sharp whacks with a hammer and see if that dislodges the dirt... good trail repair :)

sorry to be the guy to doubt all of this  ..... BUT if you HIT it with a hammer it might start BUT !!!!!!!!! you may damage the rotor or the magnets do it properly. pull it a part and re-place the copper pull in clucth it will be worn out .take the backing plate of the starter motor and you will see that all the copper plates are burnet out .or worn down to a nub .. ....if i.me wrong the WIFE swallow .

Could also be a loose earth strap..... try earthing the starter motor straight to the battery and cranking it. If it works first time, you know you have an earth return problem. I had a broken / loose earth strap and it produced all manner of strange symptoms (but all the lights (glow plugs etc) still sorta worked...

What do you clever people think?

if its a reduction gear startor replace contacts (3x8mm spanner bolts on a triangler plate)they are 2 copper angle plates one will be worn more than other replace both they are easy to change and cheep from local sparky, and grease bearings and check motor brushes, look out for a the ball bearing at end of armature, dont lose it

if its noamal startor with round solinoid replace brushes
