Strange Behaviour from the GU

Post by Summit033 »

Last night, idling down a mates drive my GU 2.8 turbo intercooled stalled - Strange....... turn the key fires into life then dies as if you just turned the key off again.

Did this about 6 times, fires up perfectly but then just dies on the same breath, no splutters, coughs, just shuts down.

On about the seventh go fires into life as if nothing was wrong...... :?

Full tank of diesel, warm engine - just been driven for an hour or so....

Has done this once before, didn't think much of it though.

Any suggestions as I am stumped as to what this could be.... if it is serious.....

Cheers

computor hiccup, take it into nissan and get them to plug it in and run a diagnostic, may be something wrong, may not be.... will still cost heaps. or ignore it and hope the problem goes away

Yeah, I think I would have to agree - Also have a dicky rev counter that dies at low revs which appears to activate the engine management light, give it some throttle and the rev counter comes back into life and the engine management light goes off again...... F@#king electronics....

Will get some lube, head down to the nissan garage and bend over......

How quickly after start-up does it shut down? Whats the oil pressure doing? If it has an EDIC system and it isnt getting oil pressure, then it will cut power to fuel stop solenoid and engine will shut down.

..... and after an hours hot driving the the oil could have thinned out enough to have an effect on the oil pressure if the engine is slightly worn.........

Turn the key, fires up, revs just start to climb, then just dies - so like 1 seconds after it has fired up. Dies smoothly as if you had turned the key of - no coughs or splutters....

So after say the seventh attempt at getting it to start it starts as if nothing wrong - continue to drive down the drive OK, park up, turn off, drop off stuff, back into it, fires up fine, drive home no problem.......... :?

Didn't notice the oil pressure - will look out for that if it does it again....

Keep an eye on it, and see if its mainly when hot.
Mine did the EXACT same, but also had problems where it wound over a few times before firing into life. Fitted an advance plate to the pump last week, and the problem is gone.

After your description above, I'm now not so sure it would be the oil pressure as it usually takes a few seconds to build up pressure anyway...sounds like its cutting out before any low oil pressure would have registered?

Dave sounds like he may have similar problem.

The GU 2.8's suffer from a "warm start" problem, where the cylinder in the injector pump wears, causing over fuelling upon starting. Fitting an advance plate, advances timing, and causes the plunger to move in an unworn part of the cylinder (I think :? ).

It is usaually hard to start once the engine has warmed up, but mine had the same problems as yours, but only 2-3 times, but the warm start problem was becoming more noticable.

I made 2 trips to Nissan, told them what the problem was, how to fix it, and $400 later they finally decided fit a $30 advance plate and, problem solved
It may be the same trouble you are having, but there are also cases where the injector pump computer plays up, and shows no fault codes, but thats a lot more $$$$

Thanks for the input. Is an infrequent problem, and usually a hot start is OK. Will just wait for the next time it does it and take it from there.

DaveM - Will send through some pics if I ever get this rear bar finished.

Not sure if the pumps are the same or not, but I got my plate fom Nissan, but only after 3 months of trying to tell the idiots what I needed.
Does yours have trouble when cold, hot, or both?
