My navi rides trials bikes and we got to talking about what makes a good trials tyre (I'm looking to replace the 833 on my trials truck) we decided that the 833's are similar to the bike tyres, flexible side walls, small evenly spaced noblies, non directional so you can turn them around and use the sharp edges on the back side.
I talked to a few guys about tyres at wellington, and no one had a clear idea what to use.
Some were still running 833's hoping that they might make them again.
A lot are running mudzillars, but they dont flex and are non directional so you have to replace them after a couple of years$$$.
You guys got any ideas?
Chris

Re: trials tyres
Yeah, that sounds about right with your diagnosis.
Soft side walls seem to be the big one.
I like the Pirelle (sp?) Scorpions, they've got a good aggressive tread pattern, some side wall tread, and nice soft sidewalls.
Goodyear MTR's might also be a good??
The really agressive muddies like some of the Simex's and some of the Silverstones have awseome tread patterns, but do to the heavy duty sidewalls they need a heavy vehicle to get them to bag. Also directional.

Re: trials tyres
go the mighty TREPADOR!!!
mine work really well, although they are directional they are cheap

Re: trials tyres
i run Mudzillas, they are stiff in the sidewall but do soften up after a days running, not to bad on sidlings if your truck is light or balanced, bloody good in the mud and relativley cheap, soft rubber wears quickly, if serious about trialling you will turn set a year over, am giving the pitbull growlers a blast at the next trial in fielding and see what happens, they are stiff in the sidewalls but very soft in the tread face, again i think the sidewalls will soften up but to what degree i don't know.

Re: trials tyres
if you were to go thru the entire field of drivers at a trial
I would say that the majority of them would have a preference for either of the 2 tyres that are no longer available
the 833 Kumho or the General Grabber MT
there are others that will rate the tyres they are currently using, but for the most part I believe they general consensus would be either of those two.
this debate has been around ever since they stopped production of the 833
years ago, you were the shiz if you had 825 R16 radial SATs, and now everyone has moved with the times and progressed into other tyres
general observation would be that you want a 6 ply radial that clears well and holds your vehicle up well on a sidling.
there will be many responses and its up to you to decide the path you will take as the choices are huge.
cheers dude

Re: trials tyres

didnt think much of my tyre the first couple of club trials I did, bit of pissing round with tyre pressures they work a treat at nationals. 3 ply sidewalls, 31"

Re: trials tyres
I'm wanting to go to 35".
John Mogonigal was ran bfg's said they were great but you needed to get thr pressures right for sidlings not sure what pressures though, I got some second hand information about the tyres chase was running on hid b class truck they were meant to be pretty good, but I haven't seen what he is running.
I would have thought the poms would be producing a 4wd trials tyre but I haven't seen one advertised.
If the sport gets bigger then some manufacture might look at.
