Re: suzuki diesel engine?
What year is it? up to 2001 its a el slugo Mazda powered one, later ones have a Pugeot one which is better, Gen 3 have Renaut ones. mazda ones have more "issues" including cracked heads, Puegot ones are good however parts are not cheap, 2001-2002 ones have a few fault ecu issues. Good points are steel diffs and fantastic fuel economy.

Re: suzuki diesel engine?
I have had a samurai with a toyota 2ct diesel ( great wagon , but diesel heavy for it ) , a 95 5dr vitara with the mazda engine and a 2002 grand vitara with the puegot engine .
The later is the most fuel efficent and has the most grunt , off coarse .
The 1995 ( very first of the diesel vitaras ) were mechanically injected and did not have an intercooler , obvious from no bonnet scoupe . There are not many of these about and its what I had . I had no problems with it , had it for about 18 months and it was showing 130,000 km . Good points , no ecu to worry about but the bad points is it was down on power compared to the intercooled model and it could not be chipped for more grunt like the later ones with the intercooler and ecu controled injector pump .

Re: suzuki diesel engine?
I wouldn't touch it. Those mazda diesels were crap even without a turbo, and with the turbo - even worse.
They are a real grenade.
Dunno why Suzuki even considered using them.
It was prob one of those "wish we never" moments for them.
