FJ 40s -Why

!0 - 20 years ago every 2nd person down south had a FJ40 and people were modifying them with V8s etc but people gave up because they were being out performed by other trucks that had more diff clearance and lighter.

I am not slinging off or being critical but just curious as to why north Islanders rave about them.

I am not interested in causing an argument and I wont be be replying on the subject. Just like to hear the reasons.

The body shape is what appeals to most people.

Funny thing people spend lots of money transplanting 40,000hp V8s in them but very rarely go for lockers - why have more grunt instead of traction?

they're still rediculously heavy and uncomfortable here too. I guess people like them because they are pretty cool and have some history.

I guess for some people its about the vehicle and not how capable they are, for me I want a capable truck but for others they get just as much enjoyment outta their standard suzi.

I've had Cruisers for 20 years and I've always had them because they are heavy always took the knocks better than anything else that was around (pre-nissan era) and I've always had flooded rivers to deal with getting to my bach in the orongorongos and all the hiluxes and everything else always washed away and sunk before my cruiser ever did (thats not meant to knock hiluxes ).... come to think of it I've never sunk a cruiser in the river over there

i like my 40 because it IS big and heavy, with that comes strength and traction.

have owned a lux, mint 93 beam axle, 2.8d double cab... was a piece of shit really, my 35yr old cruiser was nicer to drive!

why have a hilux ? flimsey,light,narrow,harsh ride(unless you coil it)shit road manners... i could go on but you get the idea that i prefer my old cruiser

and yea because its fkn COOL and has character.

yea, majority is gota be for the character and look, they are often looked at as the classic orignal rugged offroader. Unusual Thread though, could start, and already has, a bitava war. Each to there own though, we all drive what we drive to suit what we want them for.. my wise quote for the day

its a nostalgia thing

some people own classic cars, some people own muscle cars, some folks own older jeeps, and some of us own older 40s.

they are cool and thats what the public like.

this is why they have made the FJ Cruiser, along with new versions of cars like the dodge charger and challenger, the chevy camaro, the ford mustang to name a few.

they are still producing landcruisers, like jeeps and hilux's

sure times have changed and so have the shape and body design of these vehicles, but they are still badged the same and, hey, who knows, one day Mr Toyota might be radical and start production of a SWB cruiser again some day.


I don't really care what anybody says............

I think are a cool looking iconic vehicle.

who knows, one day they may fetch extravagant prices like the Phase Three XYGT Shaker Falcon.

until then folks will continue to drive them and restore them with passion

I think the 40s are awesome, the only other 4wd i'd sell my hilux for!
Character and nostalgia are the main attractions, and since going 4wding with wopass they are unbelieveably capable with just some simple mods. Rolling around with no roof on a hot summers day in a 40 would just be the bees knees i bet

pretty much the only reason i don't have one is the practically factor, with my hilux i can do a trip to aucks no worries, take 5 people, put dogs, bikes etc on the back and still have a fairly capable offroad truck that can be used as a daily driver

For me it was seeing them when I was a kid and thinking - MAN I WANT ONE!

The V8 conversion - well its not to hard to chuck a 350 into a cruiser and everyone loves V8s

Not always about being a logical choice more a passionate one - I am a huge fan of the 40s and always will be.

The body weighs nothing, so basically all you're doing is bolting a motor to a chassis and driving it. Just look at mikes landy. Drove firewood loop except for one bog on 7.50 sats. Kinda says something doesnt it. They dont have anywhere near the weight 40s do.

And they are more attractive

some of my mates have landys with cruiser running gear and potent ford V8s. awesome machines. would even like to have in my shed.

40s along with all the other brands of thier era, have style and attitude that you can't buy these days


and lets face it, if you're driving an older truck, you don't care as much about the damage as you would on a newer model.

a mate always reckoned you could place a land cruiser body onto a landrover chassis and running gear and have the worst of both worlds

hahhha, yea thats true! and its made with all original landcruiser parts (except the mill)as they are good and strong

i must confess tho, i have a suzuki part on it .... the PTO prop shaft is a grand vitara V6 driveshaft that i modified plenty strong .. but thats going to change again soon
