2.4d surfs are the stories true?
Im looking at buying a 2.4d surf around an 86'-90' to get me into 4x4ing.I have heard alot of bad stories from people about these and have been told not to touch them. Are these stories true??
Depends what you have heard - I would expect the main problem you have been told about is the heads cracking and costing a fortune to fix... yup, its true.
They survive far better if they have had the following:
regular oil & filter changes
2.5" exhaust fitted
good coolant with regular changes and a well maintained radiator
more open road driving as opposed to more round town running about.
Get a good qualified diesel mechanic to look over it and do a compression/leakdown. If it looks good then you're probably ok - as long as YOU look after it too.
There are heaps of simple but effective (and cheap) mods you can do to them, they are a great truck and there are quite a few owners of them here on the board. You won't be dissapointed with one, I'm sure.
Good luck, and welcome to the board.

i lookd at heaps when buying mine, jst make sure u get them checked out before you buy cos you can neva be sure what condition they are. however there are afew things you can check for yourself, are they blowing blue smoke, do they miss at all when stated etc (only if really bad) is there any water in the oil (grey or milky) are there bubbles in the coolant when running at temp. im no expert but these seemed to be things to look for. in reality unless you get a good one first time it will cost you abit to get them all looked at profesionally (about $100 a go) some times it aint worth it.
any one got things to add / correct?
hope that helps abit if you get a good one you will be happy they are a good truck

Surf 2.4 DT
MC,
I use to have one, 2.4 d.t.
Long story... took it for a test drive, over heated so I parked it on the side of the road, turned out the head was cracked. new head installed so I bought it, took it for a trip, overheated. took it back to car d, raidator recored, heater flushed, thermostat replaced. viscos fan and electric fans replaced and wired up to work!
Since this and three yrs later the water pump shat itself...
never ever overheated after that.
All this on standard exhaust.
the D T's get hot, dam hot, any turbo gets hot! only way u could pick head was water bubbleing in raidator and drinking the stuff!
I'd never own another 2.4dt toyo again! the 3L is the hens teeth one to get. or the kiwi 2.8, great motors.
O yeah forgot to include like steve said oil and filter every 5000k, being a dt it's got to be done! buy oil in 20 litre drums (cheaper) and change it.
