Why do they have to.....

Post by 85BJ73 »

I have a rant.....why the hell do workshops feel it is necissary to silicone parts to seal them rather than fit a gasket???? It frustrates the crap out of me. Dammit, it doesn't take that much longer to make a gasket, and silicone can be a bitch to remove, plus from my experience with hydraulics, it doesn't seal for long (ok, there is more pressure and different oils involved) but when it sets hard, and it does, it can do a lot of damage. Also, as some moron had done on my truck, the silicone around the thremostat housing had partially blocked the damn thing up
Ok, my rant over, what do you hate workshops getting wrong/bad practices?
No matter the problem, the answer is always give it more gas.......

silicone tends to crack after a while and then will leak. there are much better sealants than silicon based ones.

i've had big chunks of silicon all wraped up around valve gear before, right pain to get out, not to mention it blocking up the oil filter. silican just seams to be a easy fix. i've often used it on homes, not so much to seal things (the fitting sealed itself) but to make it look like it has been sealed.
mind you i've plenty of ceilings on brand new homes where you can see daylight through all the holes filled with silicon. some builders are cheap skates, easier to bung a bit of silicon on than it is to cut the iron right or fit a flashing.
