As far as I know all Hilux or Hiace diffs are interchangeable. Except the independent diff.

IF the truck it came from was a 2.4TD then the ratio will PROBABLY be the same.

4.3

Check that first, otherwise you could be running different ratios front and rear and that'll chop your tyres and both your diffs out. as well as your UJs on your driveshafts

They are 8" right through the surfs you're talking about, so the fitment is identical. All you need is 2 litres of LSD oil and a $5 paper gasket from toyota to do the swap.

HOWEVER... its going to be 15 years old. LSDs only do their limited slippy thing for a short period... the more they get used, the more 'open' they become... and LSDs only work at slow speed. In mud, you nail it... and its as useless as tits on a bull. If its been very (last 6 months) recently reco'd then it would be ok if it was cheap (Whats cheap? IF you get it for $100 or less then it would be good for a 4-pinion base for a locker later on - cos you could sell your old one for similar if you get lucky).

As EF said, keep your money - save for a locker.

My 2c

Sandblast the plates & tighten the springs & its almost like having a locker & it won't cost you 2 grand.

?? Just add a couple of shims (read: washers) and its done as well... but it will still slog out quite quickly... and the feel and noise of an over-tightened LSD on the road when turning is just nasty...

$2k? Lockers are $650 at worst, and home-handyman fittable in about 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Or are you refering to the ARB air locker? $1300 including pump at the moment I believe... and stil not that much longer to fit maybe 2 1/2 - 3 hours.

Steve

PS: a fully reconditioned LSD will cost you around $850 - tightened to whatever you specify from loose as a goose to tight as a scotsman... but as I mentioned the banging and shuddering of a tight LSD when turning on hard surfaces gets quite irritating... I drove one like that for a few days and it was like chinese water torture...

Last I heard ARB lockers were about $1700 on special + pump. $250 for their new mini pump that only does the locker.
