Rear Disk Brake conversion on hilux
Rear Disk Brake conversion on hilux
Has anyone put disk brakes on the back of a hilux im looking at doing it on my 01 hilux could anyone help with what disk and caliper are best to use. And how much works involed in getting then to fit, e.g do i have to just machin the center of the disk out to fit.

check out hose hustlers replacement thread

Re: Rear Disk Brake conversion on hilux
I am doing this mod at the mo. I am using mr2 rear calipers with prado rear discs. It can also be done with subaru leone calipers and solid front axle hilux discs.
swb lux with 7mge, trailgear crossover, trailgear rear lift kit, custom front bar, runva 1200lb winch, custom snorkel, 37" Mtrs, custom deck, lockright in the rear.

The certification on the Subaru calipers is a lot harder, the rules are there must be full contact pad on disk and the Subaru pads usualy overlap the top of the disk so you would have to look at other disks than front Hilux or similar.

This is Tim's truck he bought the Subaru calipers but changed to MR2 (non turbo) ones and it went through cert! he did the Subaru ones previously on another truck but with the rule changes chose the MR2 ones after having a good look at the Subie ones.

Re: Rear Disk Brake conversion on hilux
so when using mr2 rear calipers with prado rear discs will i be able to fit 15inc rims over then and do you have to machie the axle or discs in any way
Re: Rear Disk Brake conversion on hilux
also if this can fit 15inc rims what year mr2 rear calipers with prado rear discs are best to use thanks guys

Spoke to my certifier about the pad contact. Hes quite happy if i grind off any pad that doesn't contact. But only the friction material. He wants the steel part of the pad left alone. This is using the Subaru calipers. I tried the MR2 option but because of my SOA i couldn't mount them anywhere user friendly. So if anyone needs some MR2 calipers let me know

Re: Rear Disk Brake conversion on hilux
Reece (DeRanged) did mine and my mates, i used mitzi galant and front solid discs, and my mate used same discs and mazda capella calipers,
PM DeRanged hes good, if ya know hat i mean.

SASed Isuzu Mu - hilux diffs, Rears up front, disc brake conversion, ifs hub swap, crossover steering, and legal!!!!
Re: Rear Disk Brake conversion on hilux
so what year mitzi galant or mazda capella calipers, do i use so i get the right ones from the wearker, and all off this will fit inside a 15inc rim, could you send a photo of your rear set up if you can thanks

Re: Rear Disk Brake conversion on hilux
They fit inside a 15" rim, based on a front or rear disk, there is not a lot of clearance in some and the steel rim's do flex so make it fit tight. H2O has the MR2 calipers and good to know about the friction material modification Jase more options are better and never would have thought of that.
The mitsi calipers are from the galant about a 89 from memory but there are a few out there some with the handbrake some without so you really have to have a look, Search for project lemon I think there is more info in there from DeRanged.

Re: Rear Disk Brake conversion on hilux
so 89 galant will fit over soild front hilux disk that are 302mm overall width with a offset off 48mm and a thicknes of 12.7mm that what the guys at BnT said they were size wise

Gidday
this isn't a big deal there is no need to get concerned about make or yr of caliper, so long as it has a cable pull for the handbrake.... too date I've used Nissan Maxima, Mitzi Gallant, Mazda Capalla and Nissan Primia calipers they all have pretty much the same piston and pad setup the bits that change are the cable pull lever and the depth and location of the mounting holes...
As far as using a hilux solid axle solid disk there are a couple of catches... you will need the axle flange machined down to fit inside the disk hat (recomend they machine the mounting face as well, I've noticed up too 2mm of run out on these!!) you can also mount to the inside if you use front studs but this makes mounting the caliper a bit harder
The other catch is the surf axles have a larger center locating ring on the axle flange if you are running these you will need to machine out the disk center hole
If you are planing on using new disks and new pads machine your disks down by about 2mm this will give you a chance to correct any run out ... yes even brand new disks case in piont MadT's truck one of his brand new disks had .5 or .6 run out can't remember exactly now
Your Mounting plate will vary between make and model of caliper from memory (please don't rely on this
) cappella ones were a 6mm spacer ontop of a 10mm plate, the gallants were straight to the 10mm plate and maxima's were a mm machined off ...when you mount them make certain you have the caliper low enough on the disk that all the pad contacts
as stated that is a cert requirement
the hand brake cables are the fun bit but not too hard
heres a pic of MadT's one I've just done using a gallant caliper
