Landcruiser
Hi
im just getting into 4wding and currently own a 1966 series 2a land rover but want 2 upgrade to something newer so am looking at a 1990 landcruiser its a 4.2 litre diesel manual and done nearly 300k so am wondering if i should be expecting problems soon and what type of suspension do they have. Any info would be appreciated as i know nothing about landcruisers.
Thanks

Well at least you'll be amazed with the comfort. Windows that go up instead of sideways. Big step.
You need to be more specific. The first 80 series cruisers came out in 1990. Coil sprung long wheel base buses. Super comfy and not bad off raod for there size.
But I reckon your looking at a late model 70 series. Square, possibly with the FRP glass roof. They came out with the 4.2 diesel non turbo 1HZ. These be leaf sprung and are a little bit more comfy than you landy.
These engines are know for doing in the big end bearings and you would almost consider doing them every cambelt change.
You need to find out what series truck your looking at.
Can't go wrong with a cruiser.

thanks for the reply its a 80 series should of mentioned that be for so there arent many problems because i cant afford anything major. Yeah it would be nice 2 even have windows as i took the roof of very nice in the summer not so nice in the rain. Would the 4.2 engine be a non turbo then and if so how well do they go thanks alot
;-p
the 80 series came out in both turbo and non turbo options, obviously the turbo one does perform better but the non turbo one has plenty of grunt aswell,as jungle says, some of them have been having trouble with crank and associated bearings but apart from that they are a very capable offroad truck and also VERY nice to drive on the road.My Dad has an 80 series 1HZturbo (4.2d) and has had nothing but great motoring out of it,its nice on the road and tows like a dream.
as a duel purpose vehicle,ie:doing some fun 4x4 runs and using it as a daily driver i dont think you could pick a better vehicle...they are just so damn comfortable to drive

Thanks alot for the help yeah it will be a bit of both offroad and on cause ill have to sell the landy to fund it i hear the lift kits, snorkels etc are reasonably cheap so ill save up for those the guy in town sells them for $1600 ish for a 2 inch lift and $290 for a snorkel is there anywhere cheaper? he owns delta 4wd. Thanks

Yep, $390 for 2" lifted coil springs all round, $470 for big bore long travel shocks all round... Fitting $100 (in Christchurch). Snorkle price is ok tho... can't beat that. Just make sure you check the airflow ones are sealed up properly as a few people have had problems with them 'leaking' after installation... use some Silaflex around the pipe joints to help the seal. I prefer not to install snorkles, but will if asked nicely with an appropriate mixture of beer and $$$

The 80s are nice trucks... very comfortable, grunty, stable, and you'll probably get a beer cooler between the front seats too - lots of them had the little fridge option.

Thanks
Have a look in the buysell theres 2 or 3 manuals in there, theres a manaul in there with diff locks front and rear, bit more than $10k though.
Good luck
I think the 80# is a very good all round machine, not to short, not to long, good suspension, drive's sweet on road, enough grunt, reliable and some come with drinks cooler

That will be a great deal if you get one for under ten. Mine must be well over insured.
Post when you have found one and we'll let you know what to look for. My 80 has had alomst everything wrong with it under the sun. Have had the chassis repaired twice. Got it right the second time. Power steer is on its third rebuild. You definitely wanna go turbo. Of you could go for the 3F petrol and fit LPG. That could actually be cheaper these days.
Good luck dude.

I think the key is that you got that information from a Toyota place... they will want to sell you a $25k truck...
Anything with 300km will have had lots of maintenance to get there so it should be ok... get an AA check to make sure, and be aware that things will break when you 4WD so keep a little cash aside... and learn to fix it yourself, it'll save you heaps
