Supralux, A question about balls...

Post by primebrad »

Just wondering about the old ball joint flip with the tie rod end.
What method was used to machine the taper?
The J arm seems a bit awkward to chuck in the lathe so were tapered reamers used on a mill perhaps?

Cheers, any info would be sweet.

Yep. A tapered bush and then drill out arm and press fit new bush in. There is a ream available for about $3-400 (unless you know a friendly tool maker who can whip one up for you).
The J arm is still the weak link though. If you are using it hard, you can be sure it will crack at some stage between the swivel hub bearing bolts.
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

Great, thanks for clearing that up.
Thats plan A, X-over is a distant plan B for the moment.

Yep - standard reamed hole where the old ball used to go, then a tapered sleeve with the standard ream angle on the outside and the custom angle on the inside. slip the sleeve into the hole, put a hardened washer and castellated nut on, torque up and split-pin and you're done... simple, huh? :)

I have one here from the original Supralux - make me an offer if you want it.

Now we're talking lads.

Matt - I'm assuming it's a flipped arm setup? What ya got and how much are you after?

Steve- Just to clarify: Internal taper on sleeve to accept TRE Ball joint. External taper to fit new taper in j arm??
I was trying to stay away from the tapered socket in the jarm. Tapered reamers are expensive. A parrallel press fit would be sweet wouldn't it?With the hardened washer od larger than the od of the sleeve.
I've got the parts and the gear to do it at work, but buying is soo much easier.
Put a price on it mate, We are expecting our first kid in a month or so, so the little lady is being quite stingy with my allowance.
Any offer I make will probably be stupid.

The ball joint mod serves my purposes for now. I'm racing the baby to get the hilux done.

cheers
