Just how thirsty are jeeps?
Just how thirsty are jeeps?
Hi guys looking at a 95 xj ltd and was wondering what the fuel consumption of these things are like, I heard a lot of hearsay and its probably come from non jeep owners. My use of the vechicle will be mostly road driving with a small amount of offroad as I intend to get a quad for playing around on
Hilux DC stock as a rock, leaks everywhere
Re: Just how thirsty are jeeps?
I'm on my second XJ and mostly do highway kms. Until this week both were stock, my best on a trip to Wellington was 10.5 l/100km. They have a 65 litre tank as far as I know, mine always takes about 58 litres, will get around 450km to a tank. For a comparo I think they would be about the same as a V6 Surf or Pajero, but no where near as gutless haha.
Thrash anything with 4 litres though and it'll drink no matter what it is.

Its all relative, particularly depends on your driving style (jack rabbit or grandma). I don't have any experience with an XJ, but on my TJ (running same family 4.0l engine) I can do 450kms on a full tank on highway (tank is 72 litres dry fill, but usually I only manage around 62 litres - don't want to run out and having to push it). Now my other one (WG) has a 4.7l V8 and weighs more than the TJ, but because of the aerodynamics and transmission gearing, I can do 625+ kms on 65 litres.

Pretty sure myn is a 60L tank and I get 400km's. Pretty bad but I'm used to it with previous gas drinking cars lol. My motorbike however is about 3 times as economical!

1997-99 TJ had either a 15 US gallon or 19 US gallon tank (optional). 2000+ TJ have 19 US gallon tank as standard.

Re: Just how thirsty are jeeps?
Mine (a 94 and a 99 XJ) used the same amount of gas as my old ED Falcon (also 4 litre and also very similar weight.) The one time i tried my luck (in the 99)i left hamilton full, went to Whangarei, and was willing it into the first servo back in hamilton. Cant remember the kms, but wasnt bad going on 1 tank (does 550km sound about right?).
TJ does 1/4 tank, give or take a little, Ham to Auckland..... whats that, 136kms or something close to?

Re: Just how thirsty are jeeps?
Hmm. I reckon my XJ does about 13.8 l/100km if I take it to work, though that's over the Rimutaka Hill Road. That's about 400km to a tank getting 50-odd litres in at a fill.
I'd say the TJ is similar or fractionally better but it is a manual to offset the even worse aerodynamics and it's hard to say how far it really goes per tank as it has 31s but is geared for stock 28s.

Re: Just how thirsty are jeeps?
When people ask me this question about my Jeeps I just say if they have to ask they can't afford to run one. My ZJ round town averages 16.5L and on the open road about 12.5L. I just drive it. Fast, slow, whatever. They are not cheap to run, my friend has a new 4l petrol Prado and it uses more fuel and works harder to keep up but it suppose to have way more power.

Re: Just how thirsty are jeeps?
Hi there,
I have had Jeeps for a few years now.
The ZJ is pretty much stock, apart from a tiny lift to clear 31's. Its my work truck, tow truck, bach truck and everything else in between. It does all the non scratchy off roading it can too.
I also have a modified CJ7 Larado, which does all the tough stuff.
I will be at "Just Jeep" hopefully some of the Jeep guys off this site will be coming along.
I'll try for some photos soon.
