What gear to leave auto in on trailer

Post by SirGerald »

As the name suggests looking for advise in relation to what gear to leave the 4wd in while it is being towed on a trailer.

When it was manual I was advised not to leave it in gear as it can vibrate around and cause problems with the gearbox.

With an auto is it better to leave it in park or neutral??

Would prefer to leave in park as have found it does jump out of neutral, however don’t really understand how the auto gearbox works and if the vibrations from trailer etc can cause any problems.

with a manual I put it in neutral while tieing it down and then put it in a gear, or with an auto, park. Reason being is that if/when a strap breaks the vehicle will remain on teh trailer.

I have had a strap break on me before and im lucky it was in gear otherwise I would've had my 4wd in the boot.

Not sure how vibrations from the trailer would cause problems with the gearbox though :?

I'm with Turoa on the being in gear or park. Had a strop come loose due to a tyre going flat on the trailer and I know the handbrake wouldn't of held it by itself.

I'm the same as above and always put it in park with the handbrake on once tied down. I've had more than one strap break at different times so every little bit helps!
