I've got a 97 D22 Navara. Its a mighty 3.2 NON turbo auto beast...its hardly a speed demon but its eleventy squillion times more reliable and more fun than my previous car. I mainly bought it to haul mountain bikes around but lets be honest here...why would I buy a 4x4 without giving offroad a thrash?!
Havent really done anything noteworthy to it yet but im sure that will all change as the offroad bug bites.
