hi all, her in doors has given the ok for bigger rubber for the xj.... I'm going to go with 33s...is any one running them on there jeep and what would be the best ones to go with. cheers....

yep got the grinder ready, just got to sort out wheel spacers or off set rims.. bit over my head at the mo but have got some help from some mates.cant be that hard eh

Rolling circumference of 5% bigger than stock needs cert... so yes. There's a possibility (depends on interpretation) that cutting the guards might need certing too. Check under bb240c's thread about his lift, i think we discussed it there.

grinders a bit shit for the job tbh.
Go to te warehouse and buy one of those cheap red single speed jig saws and some steel blades. Will cut a straight (depending on how steady your hand is- but its not hard) clean tidy cut through whatever you want without heat destroying the paint around it.
way easier to get a nice clean tidy cut than with a grinder IMO.

cheers warren, will take you up on that offer....talked to rick at 4wd accessories today and he is pricing up some rims from the states,. and found out i have to wait two weeks for the wheel bearing to get here....bugger...

I used one of those cheap red jigsaws from the warehouse once and the blade kept on popping out of the guide and it cut all over the place.... you might end up with enough clearance for 35's after using one of those

I actually nearly choked laughing when i read this... its so true.
Yeah they are real shitty pieces of kit. I dont know what size blade they are made to accept- but its not any size blade i've found so far.
You have to center the blade in the holder by eye.. and keep it a close to 90 degrees as you can while tightening the CRAP out of that screw.
and then you have to tighten the shit out of the screws holding the flat face horizontal so that it stays horizontal during use.
I was just worried that steel shavings might get into the vents and mess things up so used a cheap one

This is what I have done to mine so far, hand held grinder with cut off disc, and then one of those flappy discs to tidy it up. Covered any irregularities up with the old fender extension, trimmed a bit.

Those are still 30" tyres on there, haven't done the back yet, not as much room to lift the fender extension thingy without hitting the door

they seem to go well, got mine from 4wdbits.co.nz, good price, prompt delivery down to Wgtn. Have had no real issues with them, one small puncture and that's it
Good performance off road for the jeep. Like you the goal is bigger tyres when finances etc can cope with it to give more clearance under the diffs and vehicle.

I'm starting to do a mild build on my XJ. I've gone with 30s as I still want to keep it usable as a tow vehicle and not have to get into the big costs of a regear etc. and I opted for Kumho KL71; they are reasonably priced and get pretty good reviews. Probably going to pop it up 3" and maybe a snorkel and call it done.
33's really need a decent sized lift to get the clearance properly, and I'm interested to see how it goes so keep us updated.

I have only just trimmed the guards recently, but been running the 30's with no lift for 18 months or so with no problems. A bit of rub on full lock but it doesn't need 3" of lift for clearance of the tyres.

I thought you had been running 30s unlifted and I agree that it won't need 3" of lift. My tyres are on 15x7 steel wheels with a significantly different offset to the stock rims however so while I have the benefit of no rubbing on the LCA at full lock there is every chance they won't stuff inside the fender lips. They have only been on since Wednesday and I haven't seen them in daylight since I left Dave Hadley's in L. Hutt, but this weekend's task is to flex it and see where it rubs. I'm not averse to attacking the openings with the angle grinder however and I will possibly have the front of the front arch cut off level with the bottom of the lights like yours by Sunday evening.
3" is the figure I have picked because I don't know I want to pay OME prices for 40mm and I haven't seen anything else under 3" that would replace the rear spring packs entirely, and I don't just want to add a leaf to my saggy current ones. I'm currently leaning toward Rusty's 3" spring pack kit plus LCAs, adjustable track rod and JKS quicker disconnects.
Part of the reason for the extra height is also to give a bit more ramp over and departure clearance as well as just to clear the tyres.

Thanks guys. I was one click away from buying the Rugged Ridge kit you linked Yeti, but the add-a-leaf aspect put me off. I might give Chamberlains a try though.

had a bit of a play around with tires to sort out what size..so I'm thinking 25 ml spacers and 33 x 10.5.... now were did i put the grinder...

Have a read of the cert specs before you buy any spacers...they are limits to the max size your allowed to use & the size varies between alloy & steel wheels.

I thought you always need a cert for spacers, and you also need a cert if you increase the track more than 5mm by some other means. I have a document with all the stuff you can do without a cert somewhere, it's a couple of years old but I don't know it would have changed since I downloaded it.

don't know about spacers now , have read they are hard on bearings and at about $300.00 aside not keen to replace them all the time..will have to sort out some rims... any thoughts any one......trucks not for hard core stuff, just getting up the rivers fishing and the odd run with the crew on here....cheers Wayne
