Rear Diff Pinion Flange Nut Size ?

Post by Pete »

Hi All,

I am trying to remove the pinion nut on the diff on my 70 series - the seal is leaking.

Does anyone know the nut size ? Its bigger than any sockets I have and I can't get in there to measure it to buy the correct size. I guess the nut should be replaced rather than re fitted as its the type to punch into a recess on the shaft to lock it in position - or is it Ok just to punch down again ?
Cheers,

Pete

Yep spot on - Thanks ,

Next question - the seal - do i need a puller to remove or can i just sort of deform it with a screwdriver and pry it out ?

You can just pry it out with a bar or a screw driver making sure you dont damage the flange where the seal fits

Getting it in needs to be done properly otherwise it will leak if deformed.

Dont just hit it with a hammer. Find something like an old bearing or pipe the right size that evenly fits on the outside of the seal dia and hit that so it goes in evenly with out damage.

Hi Pete, when replacing the pinion seal you need to be aware of the collapsible spacer between the two pinion bearings that sets the preload of the pinion bearings. You need to mark the nut and pinion shaft before undoing the nut, count the number of turns the nut comes off and then when replacing take the nut back to the same markings and then I go a wee bit more ( about half a flat on the nut to allow for a bit of wear ) then the nut is in a different place and you will be able to reuse it as it will stake in a different place.
If the pinion flange seal is leaking the flange will have a grove where the seal runs, this can be repaired by fitting a speedy-sleeve, ask for it when you get your seal, the groove on the flange needs to be filled with plastic metal before fitting the sleeve, this is also available from your seal/bearing supplier.
An idea I have used before is to measure the depth where the seal sits in the housing and then get two double lip seals that total the depth and fit them back to back this keeps the oil in and the shit out. I forgot to add, put a bead of sealer around the outside of the seal before fitting.

IT IS A 70#, OIL LEAKS HELP PREVENT RUST,

FITZY.

Pete just take your drive flange to them and they will measure and give you the right one.

Thanks Guys all sorted - sleeved the shaft - the mark was minimal I couldn't feel it but it was visible. The speedi-sleeves aren't cheap ....but they do the trick.

Cheers,
