Waterproofing 70 series electrics?

Post by BigRedCruiser »

Howdy.
Just had to get my starter motor reconditioned because it got water in it then rusted up
How do I water proof it & other electrics in my truck to stop me having to do that again?
Do i just spray that silicone spray over it or is there a better way? :?: :?:

Welcome to the off road world, this is all part of maintenance when you enter water and mud. The chances are your starter was due for an overhaul anyway. What engine has your cruiser got ?, mine has the petrol 3F and I have only had the starter out of mine twice in eleven years, the first time was for a set of contacts and clean up and the second was just a kerosene overhaul, and before anyone says that you never use it so why would it pack up :o  , the worst thing out for a 4WD is to have it sitting around. As for the other electrics, with mine anyway, they don't seem to give to much trouble. Some owners who do a lot of river and mud driving have a spare starter and alternator and swap them over once a year or six months and give the removed ones a clean out and may be new bearings and brushes ready for next time. Unless you have pocket fulls of money and you want to go 4WDing you need to learn how to do your own maintenance. As for sealing up electrics, most electrics need to breathe.

GET DIRTY,

FITZY.

Have to agree with Fitzy. Starter and Alternater are the only bits to worry about. How often you need to look at them will depend on the sort of 4wding you do and on how often you use the truck.

good idea having spares & changing them over!!
Ill look into that. I have a 3b in my cruiser that had been sitting for a while (6 months) before i got it 2 months ago its my everyday runner & offroader so it is used alot now.
Well if the alternator & starter are the only things to worry about thats all good then

just to add to the other guys good points i have found that water is not such an issue its usually the mud and crap that comes with it from big holes etc and then you get out on the road and open it up with a bunch of what is pretty much cutting paste and it chews it all out. Now days after a good play in the mud i try and drop into a decent hole in the river to give things a bit of a wash out before heading home, it gets rid of most of the cutting paste and its better to do before you get home because it will dry out on the way home and not get left in your driveway wet and sitting waiting to corrode.
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!
