Broken down!

Post by Brown Smurf »

Last weekend I bellied my surf and managed to rip out some wires from beside the trans that all go to an exhaust sensor. On one side I have 2 blacks, a blue and a white while on the other side I have Pink/green, a brown, a black and a white/red.
I have no idea which one go to which but now I have no reverse and i'm stuck in 4wd.
On top of that when I had a guess at which way they go I could have shorted out something cause now the engine won't fire.

Its a 92 petrol v6 auto surf any help would be good.

Sounds like you have done more than rip the oxy sensors and shorted something if it wont go into reverse and is stuck in 4wd.
Check the fuses first incase of shorts.Check the gearbox and transfur box for damage including linkages and selectors.Inhibator switch and wiring to this maybe.

The exhaust sensor will only be 2 of at the most 3 wires. The rest will go to the gearbox. By sounds it will be the 4wd solinoid (assume you have the little push botton on transfer lever) and inhibitor switch wiring that you have ripped off.

Give it a good clean around the box between the exhaust and box and I bet you find the other end of the wires unless you pulled them clean out of the box.

Cheers for the reply.
I already have the other end of the wires but they went into a plug and the problem is the colours dont match up so its not as simple as red to red and white to white.
All 4 wires definatly go to the oxy sensor I traced them into a loom where they get mixed up with a bunch of other wires where some go into the dizzy and some go into the front diff?
Its a bit beyond me I may have to bite the bullet and have a proffessional take a look.

Also Reverse works as a neutrel and park still works but L, 2, D and N are all forward gears. The gear linkage seems to be in good condition and has 3 actions. Should it have 6?

1.When you say "stuck in 4wd" can you move the lever out and trasfur box wont dis-engage or you cant move the lever at all?
2.Its not easy to check its in 4wd or not if its not driving.Isit just the dash light thats telling you 4wd is engaged or you know for sure its engaged? maybe its not engaged but you pulled some of these wires in the process to the engage light switch bringing the light on.
How about these wires you have damaged absolutely no way you can match them up,how about calling a wrecker or Toyota on monday and asking what colour wires go to each corner of whatever plug you have damaged or try copy the wiring from someone's Toyota. Is the component cheep enough to replace the damaged wiring end or isit the mass part of the loom.
Just a few questions you may have already asked yourself.

Well when I had it going it wouldn't disengage because usually you feel it change but the lever does move freely and i cant get 4L but i didnt actually check that linkage so thats an idea.
Calling the wrecker would be a good idea too I can connect the wires together its just finding out which colours go where as it ripped the plug out which is about a foot and a half from the sensor.
Cheers for your reply thats alot of help and I also just got emailed a wiring diagram for it.
Thought I'd take another look through the fuses and somehow I managed to miss the efi fuse is blown  So thats an easy fix for the motor not firing.

Cheers.
