Hey,
Just picked up a 1990 Terrano TD27 the other day. Already found this forum helpful to fix the sticking speedo needle and make my life a whole lot easier in tracking down the problem with the interior light not turning off (boot switch inside the latch).
Right now I'm looking to get some basic recovery gear.
I've got a tow hook on the front already so just need to get one for the back. Should I fit 2 hooks or is one sufficient?
Is there any significant difference between snatch ropes and straps? From what I've read so far the cookes ones are fairly legit.
I was thinking 9m rope with eyelets at the ends, or should I get something different?
Also, should a standard rope or strop be carried as well as a snatch one?
I've already gathered a spade, 2kg fire extinguisher and first aid kit together, so after adding tow hooks and ropes to that is there much more I should carry? I know I should have a winch of some description, but at the price of a decent hand winch I'd mayaswell get an electric one. I think I'll just avoid bog holes for the moment haha.
I was also wondering if anyone knows what sort of diff a Terrano of that age has or how to identify what it is? jacking it up and turning the wheels should tell me right?
As a way of introduction since I'm a noob around here and all that shit I'm Phil, currently living in Dunedin but spend a decent amount of time in Arrowtown.
Cheers for any help.

Ropes: learn what each does and what situations then make your mind up. I carry both types and ropes of varying lenghts.
Hooks: yes get one for the back. problem with terrano hooks is the holes don't match aftermarket ones and the front hook has no way of ensuring rope stays on when slack or in water.
Diff: check the complaince plate. It will read HG41, this means a 4.1 ratio diff. What ever the number, put a decimal place in the middle and there's your ratio.
had a terrano for years until I rolled it. Loved it and very capable. I am running a trip down your way in January, have a look in planning a trip forum. You are welcome to come along, learn and meet new people.
