Front and rear diffs?

Post by Rangielux »

Hi
Can some one out there confirm that YN60 Surf, Hilux's etc etc. Diff heads are the same front and rear?
ie. A rear diff can go in the front and vice versor?
Cheers

Yep, 100%. Same diff... only thing that might be different is if you have an LSD in the rear... but even then they swap with no changes to anything

Cheers

Great I thought so. See I was just reading my lastest edition of Aust 4wd monthly (it was a gift subscription but a good mag tho) and both tuff trucks featured had MIG lockers (I like MIG lockers, I've had a few) and Mines a pure trailer truck, trailer then mud - trailer - wash - trailer - mud. :)

So I pulled the rear and found a 4.5 LSD, what? The chassis I got was a YN60 diesel Surf? Then I checked the front and found a 4.8 Open, What?
My mates got a truck with 4.8s, but had a 4.5 2 spider spare. So I pinched that, welded it for the rear (he can now have my 4.8 as a spare). I'll tighten the LSD (from the rear) for the front and away. Right, back out to the shed.

Haha... well the LN60 should have 4.5s in it... LSD rear was an option so they did exist... but a 4.8 is a rare find in one of those... common as in NZ new petrol hiluxes tho...

Personally I'd tighten the LSD all to hell and put it in the rear, and lock the front... but thats on a streetable truck... and id use a real locker not a Lincoln locker :)

The welded 4.5 rear is in. I may have grabbed that 4.88 tight LSD off the other thread to go with the front if I had seen it earlier  , never mind.
Will tighten up the 4.5 now and "pop" it in the front. So tighten it up to hell ya reckon, std axle/axle break was about 80Nm I thought, so 150-200Nm should be right ah! (tighter the better, there is always the opposite lock and reverse I spose  )

All done this arvo. Had a skid round in my paddock and it still drives and steers really well. Seems to have nice traction also, got a tough test planned for it mid week 8)

To be honest this was my first attempt at tightening one, so it's an experiment really (although I'm reasonably confident with diff work). I had two lsd carriers to choose from and stripped them both to compare wear. One looked very good and I also tested both with a pair of spare rear axles and pry bars to check side/side resistance.
I thought by looking at it adding extra spacers would be to harsh (almost fully locking it- temporary), so I added a meaty flat waser to the centre spring that preloads the clutch packs. Will it work? time will tell. When the wheels were bolted back on it now takes all my strength and some to get the wheels to slip. Let you know if it buggers up.

I don't even own a torque wrench - shock horror! The only bolts I torque are Cyl. heads and some trans bolts - more shock horror I'm sure! But I trust myself and I scape thru on a couple of decades experiance in the trade :)
I must get a Lux manual one day tho with all the specs. torques etc.

The mid week test was reasonably sucessfull. Took it over Thompsons track on Tuesday with two other trucks. Carpark to carpark and return (had to get back to our trailers), took 5hrs from summit to Katikati end 3.5hrs back(Waikato side is 2wd almost). Total damage (all trucks) Bent rear spring - Hilux, broken winch cable - cruiser, Dented Rancho - my lux.
How did the traction aids work?- Welded rear, no question it works - allways  LSD front, didn't seem to spin both front wheels in the heavy bogs when grinding away but still gave slight improvement at speed. I jacked it up when washing it to check its action and it still has the LSD action (next one I do I would tighten more).
I'll have a go at posting a photo of us coming thru the bomb site.

Still three big porridge slops to winch thru tho  , but at least the inbetween mounds weren't slippery as well - still took a hour each way.(The track took about 8 winches over, 5 back)I do it every year with a group of mates and what I've learnt is its better going mid-week (never seen any other groups on the track), Kati kati to Te Aroha is quicker, every truck wants to have a winch fitted.

There was two slips on the Katikati side both have been spaded clear, one has a bit of a climb over but it's ok.

Te Aroha side slips were cleared up last month and the road reopened about Three weeks ago. Its smooth as, but a bit of rain and a mob of trucks will knock it around alot very quickly loking at the surface.

Don't bother... I have three Hilux manuals - Chilton, Haynes and a factory Toyota one... but I still do stuff up the same way as you... The manuals are just there for other people to come and read and get all covered in grease  lol...

Steve

PS: That track looks like fun... really looking forward to coming to play in it now... although it probably won't be the MU, new project on the boil...
